PA Trooper in Hit-And-Run; PA Supreme Court Dismisses Mail-in Suit; NJ Extends Mail-In Voting

A Pennsylvania State Trooper was injured in a hit-and-run in the East Falls section of Philadelphia on Saturday morning, 5/16. It happened around 10:30 a.m. on the 3400 block of School House Lane near Apalogen Road. The trooper was on a motorcycle when he was struck by a car. The vehicle was last seen fleeing westbound on Ridge Avenue. The trooper was taken to Temple University Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time, but he is expected to be ok. The accident remains under investigation.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit on Friday, 5/15, that sought to force election officials to accept mail-in ballots up to a week after election day during the pandemic. Disability Rights Pennsylvania, the Senior Law Center, and others sued in April to have the deadline for absentee and mail-in ballots extended beyond election day to account for possible postal delays due to the pandemic so that all ballots received would be counted. Currently the deadline for mail-in ballots is 8 p.m. on election day, the same as when polls close. Gov. Wolf's administration argued against the extended mail-in date saying that it would be unconstitutional because voters would have different deadlines. Election day has been moved from April 28 to June 2. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is 5pm on May 26. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Friday, 5/15, that the state's upcoming June 7 presidential primary will be conducted primarily by mail. All registered Republicans and Democrats will be sent a postage-paid vote-by-mail ballot. All unaffiliated and inactive voters will be sent a mail-in ballot application. The deadline for returning mail-in ballots has been extended from 48 hours to 7 days past election day. However, all ballots must be postmarked June 7. Voters will still be able to go to the polls, but there will be far fewer polling places and social distancing and sanitation measures will be in place. "For in-person voting, we plan to require at least one polling location to be open in each municipality, and social distancing protocols will be enforced within these polling locations," Murphy said.
