| Jersey Shore/Delaware Beaches Open Memorial Day; Philly Virtual Graduation; Pandemic EBT Available |

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Thursday, 5/14, that the Jersey Shore as well as lake shores will be open this summer. All public and private beaches will be open effective May 22 in time for Memorial Day Weekend, with social distancing guidelines in place. Public outreach campaigns will remind beach visitors of the guidelines and what is expected of them. Face coverings and masks are not mandated but are highly recommended.
There will be restrictions on:
- beach capacity limitations.
- six foot distancing between beach goers except for family groups.
- prohibition on contact sports, organized games, and special events.
- proper and regular sanitation is required.
- boardwalk restaurants remain take-out delivery only.
- playgrounds, rides, arcades, games, water fountains, picnic areas, visitor centers, and water play equipment remain closed for the time being.
- showers, changing areas, and restrooms will be open. Restroom facilities at parks will also reopen.
Delaware Governor John Carney announced on Thursday, May 14, that beaches and community pools will reopen in time for Memorial Day Weekend. Restrictions will be lifted on Friday, May 22, at 5 p.m. but social distancing guidelines will remain. Delaware still has a ban on short-term rentals and out of state visitors must quarantine for 14-days. State Police will be checking for out of state travelers. Beachgoers must maintain 6 feet from each other, except if they are in family groups. Face coverings are required on the boardwalk, but encouraged on the beach. Arcades and boardwalk games remain closed and restaurants/bars are still limited to takeout. Pools will be limited to 20% capacity. Ice cream shops may reopen for takeout or delivery this Friday, May 15, at 5 p.m.
School District of Philadelphia Superintendent William Hite announced that the district will be holding a Virtual Graduation for the Class of 2020 this year. The graduation ceremonies will be broadcast on the district's public access television station, PSTV, as well as online via its social media pages. The citywide graduation for high school seniors will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. Hite said there will be a "special guest" keynote speaker, a student performance, student speakers, remarks from Mayor Kenney, video montage, and more. A virtual after-party will be held for seniors later that night. Students and parents will receive more information about the ceremony next week. The city also has set up a hotline for high seniors to get help with any thing related to end of school, careers, college, financials, counseling, or more. That number is 215-400-4130.
Families with children that receive free or reduced-price meals at school are eligible for the new Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer card. If you have a current EBT card, the funds will automatically be added to that card, otherwise you'll receive a separate P-EBT card. The program pays $5.70 per child per day that they were out of school due to the pandemic through the end of the school year. Philadelphia families who were already on the meal program program can expect approximately $365 per child. The amount is prorated if you joined the program after April 1. The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.
