| Shooting at Delaware Cemetery, Gunman Found Dead; Wolf Unveils Next 13 Counties; Reopen Philadelphia |

Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting at a cemetery in Bear that has left two people shot. It happened around 10:15 a.m. on Friday, 5/8, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery on the 2400 block of Chesapeake City Road. Police arrived to find a man and a woman suffering from gun shot wounds. One was taken to the hospital. Their conditions are not known. Police say the shots came from an adjacent wooded area. Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect before he ran into the woods. Nearby residents have been told to shelter in place. Delaware State and New Castle County police are investigating and searching for the suspect who is on the loose.
UPDATE: The gunman has been found dead in the woods. There is no longer a threat to the community.
UPDATE: The 85-year-old woman from from Elkton, Maryland was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 86-year-old husband remains hospitalized. The suspect was a 29-year-old male from Middletown, Delaware. Police are trying to determine his motive.
UPDATE: The 86-year-old man has died from his injuries. The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Sheldon Francis from Middletown.
UPDATE: The couple has been identified as 86-year-old Paul Marino and 85-year-old Lidia Marino both from Elkton, Maryland.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Friday, 5/8, that 13 western counties will be moving into the 'yellow phase' of the state's reopening plan starting next Friday, 5/15. Those counties will join 24 north-central and northwestern counties that partially reopened today. They include Allegheny, Armstrong, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Indiana, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland. The City of Pittsburgh is in Allegheny County. Beaver County is not included. It is the location of the state's worse nursing home outbreak.
A #ReOpenPA / Reopen Philadelphia protest and counter-protest was held at Philadelphia City Hall on Friday, 5/8, around noon. Several different organizations planned simultaneous demonstrations either against or in support of the strict stay-at-home orders and more specifically the closure of non-essential businesses. The Reopen Philadelphia group planned to drive around City Hall and called for an end to the closure of non-essential businesses. They say closures have had dire economic consequences which are threatening livelihoods and leading to record unemployment. They were thwarted by anti-fascist protestors who blocked traffic on foot and held messages saying "Reopen = Death." They are concerned that returning to open operations will cause a spike in cases and more coronavirus COVID-19 deaths. They charge the other protesters with caring more about profits over lives. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health reported 470 new positive cases on Friday. According to Governor Wolf's reopening guidelines, a region/county will need to have less than 50 cases/100,000 people per capita over a 14 day period to move to the next phase. For Philadelphia, that would mean 792 cases/1.584 million people over 14 days or about 57 per day. Philadelphia's daily cases have been dropping, but still far from meeting the metric over a two week period. |
