New Jersey Schools Closed Rest of Year; Building Collapse, Woman Injured; Man Falls in Schuylkill

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Monday, 5/4, that all schools will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year due to coronavirus COVID-19. Schools were previously closed through May 15. The decision was made 'to protect the health of our children, our educators, and their families.' Remote instruction will continue as it has since mid-March for the state's 1.37 million students in 555 school districts. "This is a difficult decision and I know that many students, parents, and staff would like to be able to return to school," Murphy said in a press release. "However, I have been unwavering on the message that we need to make decisions based on science, not emotion. And while New Jersey is making great strides in mitigating the spread of COVID-19, science tells us that at this point, we can't safely re-open our schools." The New Jersey Department of Education will meet with parents and other stakeholders to determine if summer programs held at schools will be allowed to open and to discuss the 2020-2021 school year.

The NJSIAA has also determined that spring sports will be canceled for 2020. "The NJSIAA Medical Board concluded that due to a lack of testing, viable treatments, and a vaccine, that spring sports were not a viable option," Murphy said.

A woman was injured when a vacant building collapsed in North Philadelphia on Sunday morning, 5/3. It happened just before noon on the 3300 block of North 6th Street. The woman was walking by when the building suddenly collapsed. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to Temple University Hospital. She is in stable condition. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing.

A man is in critical condition after falling into the Schuylkill River on Sunday afternoon, 5/3. It happened just before 5 p.m. near Kelly Drive and Midvale Avenue. Police say that the 56-year-old lost his balance and hit his head before falling into the water. A passerby saw him and called 911. First responders pulled him from the river. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center and was placed in critical condition.
