| PA, NJ, and DE 7 State Consortium; Philly Schools Start New Material; #StayHomePHL Mobile Billboards |

Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware have joined a regional purchasing consortium along with New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island to pool their market power in the procurement of personal protection equipment (masks, gowns, gloves, face shields), coronavirus tests, ventilators, and other medical equipment. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the partnership at a joint press conference on Sunday, 5/3. By working together, the region will be able to use their collection bargaining power to prevent price gouging while at the same time the individual states will stop competing against each other for the supplies.
"By working together we can combine our strengths to build the capacities we all need. We can exploit our market size to encourage producers to make what we need, we can exploit our financial strength to give that encouragement added weight, and we can exploit the great research institutions and the brainpower in our region to increase our chances of success. I look forward to working with my fellow governors - and my neighbors - to build a strong regional supply chain," Gov. Tom Wolf said.
"Our states should never be in a position where we are actively competing against each other for life-saving resources," Governor Murphy said. "By working together across the region, we can obtain critical supplies as we begin the process to restart our economies, while also saving money for our taxpayers."
The School District of Philadelphia will begin remote instruction of new material starting Monday, May 4. Until now, all school work has been review of previous material. The district has loaned 81,000 Chromebook computers to students who do not have access to a computer at home. They are still working on getting internet access to all students. Students can still get paper packets of work. The district says they haven't determined how students will be graded on the new material, especially since not all students have the same access. "We don't know yet if the grades are going to be based on participation or the actual content," Superintendent Dr. William Hite said. "Grades are really designed as a way to get feedback, but it is structured to do no harm to students."
The City of Philadelphia hired three mobile digital billboard trucks to drive around the city this weekend to remind residents that we are still under a stay-at-home order and any time spent outside must be done safely and with proper social distancing protocols in place. Saturday was a beautiful, warm, and sunny day and many Philadelphians got outside to enjoy the weather. Locations such as Rittenhouse Square and Kelly Drive attracted crowds of people, many of whom were not wearing masks or staying 6 feet from one another. The billboards displayed messages such as "We must stay inside to stay together" and "#StayHomePHL" as reminders that we are under quarantine. There was also a recorded message played from a loudspeaker from Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw reminded residents that there is a $500 fine for violating the stay-at-home order. You are allowed to leave your home for exercise, but you must take precautions. "This is really just a reminder that we're not through yet, that we still have work to do and in to order to really be able to flatten that curve we need their help," Managing Director Brian Abernathy said. "We need the public's help to really be able to do that." The trucks drove though many neighborhoods all over the city. |
