High Wind Warning on Stormy Monday; Philly Church Canceled Planned Easter; Coast Guard Rescue Off NJ

The entire area can expect significant stormy weather on Monday, 4/13. There is a High Wind Warning that will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts 55 to 60 mph. Down the shore those wind gusts could be 60 to 70 mph. According to the NWS warning, "Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected." Along with the wind there will be heavy rain, potentially starting overnight. We can see 1-2" of precipitation and the potential for localized flooding. There is also the possibility of a thunderstorm, especially in the afternoon. Wind gusts in any thunderstorm could be even higher. It will be warm though, High 75. These are almost Tropical Storm conditions.

The North Philadelphia church that was planning on holding in-person Easter services on Sunday morning, 4/12, decided to cancel at the last minute and live stream the service instead. Pastor Dr. Hrb Lusk of the Greater Exodus Baptist Church had announced on Friday, 4/10, that he intended to open his church doors for Easter Sunday services for congregants to attend in-person. He was not going to allow any more than 50 inside and sit participants two to a pew, every other pew, to allow for safe distancing. However, after talking with Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley, Lusk decided to keep the doors closed.

"After much prayer and consultation with the City's Health Commissioner, Dr. Thomas Farley late last night, I have decided that Greater Exodus Baptist Church will only hold a live-streamed Easter service this Sunday, April 12," Lusk said. "The church has canceled in-person services until further notice. This decision pains me a great deal that on the most important day in the history of Christianity, the doors of the sanctuary will not be open to the people. I know that due to the pandemic, it's the right thing to do. Protecting the health and well-being of our community is paramount."

Many congregations have turned to using live streaming in order to have their communities participate in services. Including the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's stream from the Cathedral Basilica, dozens of other churches and parishes are broadcasting their own. Other Christian denominations and other faiths are also using technology to stay connected. Today, for Easter, there were several churches who tried to bring people together on this special day while keeping everyone at a safe distance. Several 'parking lot' services took place. Pastors set up the pulpit outside the front doors and congregants arrived in and stayed in their cars. The pastors preached their Easter messages over loud speakers and sometimes through a small FM transmitter so the participants could tune in their cars.

The Coast Guard rescued a man from a disabled sailboat that was taking on water off the coast of New Jersey on Friday evening, 4/10. The tanker ship Hellas Poseidon heard a distress call and saw black smoke 2 miles away. They found the 25-foot sailboat Serena about 200 miles southeast of Cape May, NJ. It was taking on water and an electrical fire damaged its communications. The Hellas Poseidon called for help. The Coast Guard sent a HC-130 Hercules airplane and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the air station in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Because of weather conditions, the man had to jump from the boat with a lifejacket and swim to the rescue diver. They were hoisted to safety. The man was sailing from North Carolina to New York when he got caught in a storm.
