Steve Ravitz, ShopRite Owner, Dies of COVID-19; Wildfire in South Jersey; DE Parks Limiting Crowds

Steve Ravitz, owner-operator of six family-owned supermarkets including five ShopRites in South Jersey, has died of coronavirus COVID-19. He was 72. He was known as much for what he did for the community as selling groceries. "Steve will be best remembered for philanthropic community non-profit organization - literally millions of dollars," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday. "We know that his legacy will be carried on by his family. God bless you, Steve." He took over the family business from his father whose first store opened in 1950 in Philadelphia. According to the Ravitz Family Market website, "OUR PURPOSE: To Care deeply about people, helping them to eat well and be happy." Rabbi Emeritus Steven Lindemann of Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill told the Burlington County Times that Ravitz called him in March. "He said, â€˜I want you to be sure to use the Act of Kindness Fund to help people. And if you need more, let me know.â€™ There are many people who will give when called. There are not many people who call to give. Steve was that person."

A forest fire is burning in South Jersey fueled by the winds Thursday evening, 4/9. The fire started around 5:30 p.m. near the Millville Airport. It has burned over 1,000 acres in Downe Township, Cumberland County. New Jersey Forest Fire Service officials plan to let the fire burn itself out, but are monitoring it. No homes or people are in danger. It is not clear how the brush fire started.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced that it will be taking steps when necessary to limit the number of visitors to state parks and wildlife areas to reduce crowding and comply with social distancing guidelines. "As the days have gotten nicer and the stay-at-home period endures, we have been increasingly concerned to see the behavior of some visitors to our state parks and wildlife areas, with full parking lots and increasingly crowded trails," said Secretary Shawn Garvin. "Limiting the number of people when we see too much crowding will allow us to keep these public spaces open for individuals who need a break and fresh air, but to keep everyone safe."
