Wawa Stops Made-to-Order in Philadelphia; 50k Laptop Purchase Approved; Fanatics to Make Gowns/Masks

Wawa has announced that they are temporarily suspending in-store made-to-order food at all of its Philadelphia stores. This will go into effect at the company's 42 Philadelphia city stores at 5 a.m. Friday March 27. "Following recent guidance from Philadelphia City officials, beginning March 27th, we are temporarily suspending built-to-order custom food service ordering in our Philadelphia stores. To help offset this temporary change, we are expanding our express offer of both hot and cold foods to include more options," said Wawa in a statement. "This change in our Philadelphia City stores will enable us to move people through the store faster and keeping their interactions brief, while further encouraging the practice of social distancing. As an essential provider, we will remain open to serve our Philadelphia community with hot and cold express items and an assortment of provisioning and packaged goods, keeping the health and safety of every associates and customer in our store our top priority," the company added.

You can still order and have Wawa's menu items delivered. "Wawa's full built-to-order menu items will remain available in the City of Philadelphia through delivery service provided by our partners at Door Dash, Grub Hub and UberEats. In addition, mobile orders placed through The Wawa App will be filled through four designated Wawa stores that will be converted to delivery and mobile order fulfillment sites," Wawa added.

A worker at an Aramingo Ave. store did test positive for coronavirus. That store has closed until the necessary steps have been taken. A worker at a Macungie, Lehigh County, store also tested positive. That store also was closed for deep cleaning.

The Philadelphia Board of Education has approved the $11 million purchase of 50,000 Chromebooks for the School District of Philadelphia. The computers will be used by students to remotely learn while school is closed. The district already has many computers available and this purchase will supposedly make up the difference. A little more than half of students in the district already have access to the Internet from a computer at home. That disparity has prevented the district from implementing a full remote instruction program because some children would be left out. "The digital divide in Philadelphia has been long standing, with many communities having access to in-home computers and internet services for their children while many still do not," Superintendent William Hite said. "This inequity is a significant barrier to our goal of helping all students in every neighborhood reach their full academic potential." The details of any technology distribution and how those with out Internet would get access have not been released.

Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin is also the founder and executive chairman of sports clothing manufacturer Fanatics. The company, with offices in Conshohocken, makes official apparel for Major League Baseball and others. Since MLB's season has been delayed until at least May, Rubin decided to convert their Easton, PA, manufacturing facility from making jerseys to producing protective gear for emergency personnel. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred agreed to the plan. Now, the material that would have been turned into uniforms for your favorite baseball teams is now going to be made into gowns and masks for doctors, nurses, and other medical workers. These garments are not as protective as the regular PPE used, but they can be used as an added layer on top to extend the life of other protection. These garments also can be washed.
