The Greater Philadelphia YMCA has laid off 3,400 workers due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. 700 of those employee were full-time. There are now just 61 employees left working across the organization's 16 branches and 12 early learning centers. They have all taken pay cuts. President and CEO Shaun Elliott has completely cut his pay and his top staff have cut their pay in half. Elliott said that 90% of the YMCA's revenue comes from the gym and child care. The rest ones from donations and grants. Since both the gyms and child cares were forced to close, that has put a dent in their operations. Six sites are still operational providing child care to essential workers. Employees will be paid through April 5 as well as paid time off. The YMCAs plan to reopen as soon as the outbreak passes. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced on Thursday, 3/26, that the city has ended negotiations to use the former Hahnemann University Hospital as a possible quarantine or isolation location. Kenney said, "we are moving on." The city could not come to terms with Joel Freedman, the owner of the hospital, for a lease. The building, closed since last year, would also require work to bring it back online. "We understand that the City doesn't feel that the Hahnemann building currently fits their urgent needs as a quarantine site," Sam Singer, a spokesperson for Freedman, said. "Should the situation change we stand ready to reengage in discussions on how the City or the State can best use the facility." The city is continuing to look for spaces to set up temporary hospital space including in hotels or possibly the convention center.

Philabundance, the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley, is ceasing operations for three days after one of its employees came into contact with a person who tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. "We are closing out of an abundance of caution," Philabundance Director of Communications Stefanie Arck-Baynes said. "We intend to have staff back in the building Sunday to help expedite distribution being back on track." A second employee lives with a person who has a fever, but it is not known yet if that person has COVID-19. No one who works at Philabundance has tested positive. The food bank's two main buildings will be thoroughly cleaned.
