Gov. Wolf Extends Stay-At-Home to Erie, Lehigh and Northampton; PA Gun Shops Open By Appointment

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has extended 'stay-at-home' orders to additional counties in the commonwealth. On Tuesday, 3/24, Wolf ordered that residents in Erie county 'to stay at home or at their place of residence except as needed to access, support or provide life sustaining business, emergency or government services' starting at 8 p.m. on 3/24. On Wednesday, 3/25, Wolf added Lehigh and Northampton counties to the order starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Monroe, Montgomery, and Philadelphia are already under the 'stay-at-home' order. Wolf also provided an updated list of life-sustaining and non life-sustaining businesses allowed to stay open. (see list below).

Pennsylvania Governor Wolf released an updated list of life sustaining businesses on Tuesday, 3/24. The original list put out over the weekend deemed gun stores in the 'Sporting Goods, Hobby, Book, & Music Stores' category non life-sustaining and therefore should be closed. This prompted a lawsuit that claimed the closure order violated the Second Amendment. The lawsuit was dismissed by the PA Supreme Court, but justices urged the Governor to try and make concessions in the order for firearms dealers. Wolf did not announce the changes made in the updated list in regards to gun stores, but they will now be allowed to operate on a limited basis. Dealers can still sell guns at their physical location, but by appointment only in order to limit the number of people gathering at the store at one time. Here are the guidelines:

"Except that firearms dealers may operate physical businesses on a limited basis to complete only the portions of a sale/transfer that must be conducted in-person under the law, subject to the following restrictions: 1) all such sale/transfers will be conducted by individual appointment during limited hours only so as to minimize social interactions and congregating of persons; 2) the dealer will comply with social distancing, sanitization of applicable area between appointments, and other mitigation measures to protect its employees and the public."
