| Sixers/Devils Employees Told to Expect Pay Cut; Philabundance Gets Big Donations; DE Schools Closed |

The NBA Philadelphia 76ers and NHL New Jersey Devils have notified at-will, non-contracted employees that they will be subject to pay cuts starting next month. Full time employees making $50,000 or more will be affected and cuts could go as high as 20% for those making $70,000 or more. Both teams are owned by billionaires Josh Harris ($3.8 billion), Michael Rubin ($2.9 billion), and David Blitzer ($1.3 billion). The pay cuts would start April 15 and last through June. The teams will also ask contracted front office employees to take similar cuts, but they cannot be forced. The teams are not reducing any 401(k) or healthcare benefits and say this is a temporary measure to avoid reducing the workforce. The NBA announced that players will be paid their full salaries through April 1, but cannot guarantee they will be paid their full salaries again on April 15.
Philabundance, the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley, has received support from some well known Philadelphians in the past few days. Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson, stars of ‘It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ pledged to match the first $25,000 of a GoFundMe campaign set up for the Philadelphia food bank. As of Monday night, 3/23, the fund drive was at almost $53,000. Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz and his wife. US Women's Soccer player Julie Ertz, pledged $100,000. Eagles center Jason Kelce and his wife, Kylie, also pledged $100,000. Former Eagle Connor Barwin pledged $25,000. Barwin is currently serving as a special assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Kylie and I truly love the city of Philadelphia. We are so thankful for the opportunity to represent this city on Sundays, but that love is not reserved for just the sixteen days in the Fall. We want to be a part of the solution and we know, through Philadelphia grit, we will get through this together," Jason Kelce said.

Delaware Governor John Carney announced that schools in the state will remain closed through May 15. They were originally ordered closed through March 27. He also said that the state intends to formally recommended that no school extend the school year beyond the end of June. "On March 13, after significant discussion with superintendents and charter school leaders, I ordered public schools to close through this Friday, March 27," Carney said. "This two-week period was intended to help school leaders and educators plan for what came next.
"We have spent a significant portion of the last week discussing plans for remote instruction, the delivery of meals, and other social services. This is an unusual time - but children still deserve access to a quality education, and families rely on the social services we deliver in our schools every day. We'll continue to work directly with school leaders on these important issues." |
