New Jersey Gov. Orders All to Stay Home; FAA Briefly Suspends Planes to PHL; SEPTA Taking a Big Hit

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has ordered that all New Jersey residents stay home until further notice. There are some exceptions including obtaining essential goods or services, seeking medical attention, visiting family or close friends, reporting to work, or engaging in outdoor activities. "From day one, we've made a commitment to be guided by the facts and take any action necessary to protect the health and safety of New Jersey's nine million residents," said Governor Murphy. "We know the virus spreads through person-to person contact, and the best way to prevent further exposure is to limit our public interactions to only the most essential purposes. This is a time for us all to come together in one mission to 'flatten the curve' and slow - and eventually halt - the spread of coronavirus." The order also prohibits all gatherings of individuals whether public or private including parties, celebrations, or other social events. The order also closes all non-essential retail businesses.

List of exempt New Jersey businesses allowed to stay open:
• Grocery stores, farmer's markets and farms that sell directly to customers, and other food stores, including retailers that offer a varied assortment of foods comparable to what exists at a grocery store;
• Pharmacies and medical marijuana dispensaries;
• Medical supply stores;
• Gas stations;
• Convenience stores;
• Ancillary stores within healthcare facilities;
• Hardware and home improvement stores;
• Banks and other financial institutions;
• Laundromats and dry-cleaning services;
• Stores that principally sell supplies for children under five years;
• Pet stores;
• Liquor stores;
• Car dealerships, but only for auto maintenance and repair, and auto mechanics;
• Printing and office supply shops;
• Mail and delivery stores.

The Federal Aviation Administration briefly suspended all departing flights to NYC-area and Philadelphia airports due to coronavirus-related staffing issues on Saturday afternoon, 3/21. It happened around 2 p.m. There were apparently staffing problems at a regional air-traffic control center. The suspension only lasted around 30 minutes and has since been called off.

Since businesses are closed and residents have been urged to stay home, SEPTA is taking a bit hit. Transit ridership is down 64% and Regional Rail is down 88%. General Manager Leslie Matthews said in a letter (see below) that the agency expects to have a $150 million deficit at the end of the year. They have already cut Regional Rail schedules and plan to cut Transit schedules starting Monday. They are also considering further reductions in the schedule. Matthews announced that herself and the executive leadership team will be taking a 10% pay cut. There will also be a freeze on hiring, overtime, and marketing.

Former Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor has signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Agholor played 5 seasons with the Eagles after being drafted in the first round in 2015.
