PA Schools Get Waiver, Serve To-Go Meals; Philly Cultural Institutions Close; Some NJ Schools Close

Pennsylvania announced on Friday, 3/13, that it received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow eligible schools to serve meals to low-income students by drive-through or grab-and-go settings during the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. The waiver allows students to still receive meals despite schools being closed. To be eligible, a meal site must be in the attendance area of the closed school building and the school must have 50 percent or more of students eligible for free or reduced meals.

The meal program was a large concern for Philadelphia officials in wanting to keep schools open. 30 Philadelphia sites will be serving two grab-and-go meals a day, breakfast and lunch. They will be open between 9 a.m. and noon each day. Several recreations centers will be open and will be providing a meal at 3 p.m. See the full list at the bottom of the page. If you are in a school district elsewhere in the state or if your Philadelphia school is not listed, contact your school for their plans on meals.

Philadelphia cultural institutions are temporarily closing due to the coronavirus COVID-19. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, the Barnes Foundation, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, and the Franklin Institute on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway are all closed. The National Constitution Center, the Museum of the American Revolution, and the National Museum of American Jewish History are also closed. Many more sites are also closed or only opening for select programming. Casinos in Philadelphia are also suspending operations including Rivers Casino Philadelphia and Harah's Casino Chester. Hard Rock Casino in AC and several others are canceling entertainment. Some concerts in the Philadelphia area are continuing, however, at venues that are below the recommended 250-1000 crowd size. It is best to check with those venues in case the policy changes and or individual shows get canceled.

UPDATE: Valley Forge Casino and Parx Casino are now closed.

New Jersey Schools are expected to get closed statewide within the next few days according to Gov. Phil Murphy. In the meantime, Burlington County schools will close for a month starting Monday, 3/16. Cherry Hill schools will close for two weeks starting Monday, 3/16. Camden City schools will close for two weeks beginning Wednesday, 3/18.
