PA Governor Wolf Closes Schools Two Weeks; Philly SWAT Officer Killed; National Emergency Declared

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced that all schools K-12 in the state will be closed for two weeks starting Monday, 3/16.

All Philadelphia schools will now be closed for two weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak due to staffing concerns. Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. William Hite said, "This closure is now necessary as the neighboring counties where many of our district employees reside are asked to self-quarantine and cannot adequately staff schools." All schools will be thoroughly cleaned during this period. Schools will be closed until March 27.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that all Archdiocesan High Schools and parochial and regional grade schools in the five county area will be closed for two weeks. Students will continue education from home. All activiites have also been canceled. In a statement the archdiocese said, "A Special Task Force has been convened to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on Catholic education and develop our ongoing response. Matters are being evaluated on a daily, if not hourly basis. This decision to adopt this course of action was not made lightly. It came only after careful, thought, planning, consideration, and prayer. We will continue to monitor the CDC recommendations as well as directives from governmental agencies and adjust policies accordingly." Schools will be closed until March 27.

Bucks County and Delaware County schools had also reportedly decided to close schools for two weeks.

A Philadelphia SWAT corporal was shot and killed while serving a warrant on a murder suspect in Frankford early Friday morning, 3/13. 46-year-old Philadelphia Police Cpl. James O'Connor was a 23-year-veteran with 15 years on SWAT. He was married with two grown children. It happened just before 6 a.m. on the 1600 block of Bridge Street. He was serving an arrest warrant on 22-year-old Hassan Elliott for a March 2019 homicide. Officers were met with gunfire through a closed door on the second floor. O'Connor was hit in the left shoulder blade. He returned fire and struck two men. O'Connor was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The two men were taken to Einstein and Jefferson Hospitals and are in stable condition. Elliot was not shot in the confrontation, but he was taken into custody. Two others in the home were also taken into custody. O'Connor's son is also a Philadelphia Police officer and his daughter is an active duty Air Force member.

President Trump has declared a National Emergency in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19. The declaration opens up to $50 billion of aid and lifts restraints on hospitals and healthcare systems. The president was back by leaders in private industry who would help implementing the various aspects of testing including Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Google, Quest Labs, Labcorp, and more. A self-assessment website will become available soon. If you are having symptoms and you are indicated for a test by the assessment, you will be directed to the nearest retail location for a drive-by test. Results will take 24-36 hours.
