New Montco COVID-19 Cases, CBSD Schools Open/GA Closed; Allentown Club Fire; Deadly Lancaster Crash

Montgomery County officials announced two new coronavirus cases. These two new presumptive positive COVID-19 cases are from the same household in Lower Merion Township. They are being treated for mild symptoms and are in isolation at home. This brings the total in PA to 6. Montgomery County Board of Commissioner Dr. Valerie Arkoosh said that they are signing a declaration of disaster emergency in the county. "It actually frees up some resources for us as a county so that we can make sure that we are prepared for what we believe will be more cases," Arkoosh said.

Central Bucks School District says that it will reopen on Monday, 3/9, and operate on a normal schedule. Five schools were closed on Friday out of an abundance of caution. Some students and staff from Butler Elementary School, Titus Elementary School, Tamanend Middle School, Tohickon Middle School, and Central Bucks South High School may have come into contact with a person from out-of-state at a private gathering two weeks ago who had subsequently tested positive for the virus. Bucks County officials say that all of those people have tested negative. All of the schools have also been thoroughly cleaned.

Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Montgomery County announced that it will close for three days after having close ties to a presumptive positive coronavirus case in the county. A GA student's family member is one of the presumptive positive cases of coronavirus in Montgomery County. "While that family member is experiencing only mild, cold-like symptoms, and while the GA student has no symptoms, the student will self-quarantine at home for at least two weeks. The family member has not been on GA's campus, but the student was in attendance through Friday, March 6," said school officials in a letter. Germantown Academy Head of School Rich Schellhas said in a statement, "Though the Montgomery County Department of Public Health has advised us that there is no concern for anyone else right now, we are a large community with people of all ages and conditions and caring for them must be our priority." The school will be closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, March 9-11. It will then operate virtually starting March 12 through March 17 when spring break begins. In the meantime, the school will be thoroughly cleaned.

A 2-alarm fire broke out at an Allentown nightclub early Sunday morning, 3/8. It happened around 3 a.m. at the Deja Vu Lounge on 300 block of Hamilton Street. The fire had started in the basement and burned up through the walls. It was brought under control in an hour. Everyone was able to escape unharmed, including residents of three upstairs apartments. One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for a non life-threatening injury. The Red Cross is helping the displaced families. The nightclub had been the scene of a mass shooting in June 2019 where 10 people were injured. One person has been charged in that attack in what was described as targeted gang violence.

Three adults were killed and an 8-year-old girl was injured in a head-on crash in Lancaster County on Saturday afternoon, 3/8. It happened around noon on Route 222 in West Earl Township. A car was headed north when it crossed the median and hit a minivan head-on. The 73-year-old driver of the car died at the scene. The driver of the minivan, 60-year-old Harold Sheaffer, also died at the scene. 60-year-old Dawn Sheaffer died at Lancaster General Hospital. An 8-year-old who was traveling in the minivan suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
