DUI Woman Hit 12yo Boarding Bus; Mercy Philadelphia to Close Emergency/Inpatient; AT_T Store Robbed

Bensalem Police have arrested and charged a woman who they say was under the influence when she struck and injured a 12-year-old girl boarding a school bus last month. Kathleen Wesley of Croydon is charged with aggravated assault while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, meeting or overtaking a school bus, and reckless driving. It happened around 7:30 a.m. January 6 at Bensalem Boulevard and Timber Lane. Police say that Wesley ignored the bus' stop sign and lights. She struck the girl as she crossed the street to get on the bus with her white Ford F-150 pickup truck. The girl was treated for serious injuries and remains in the hospital. A blood test revealed that Wesley was under the influence at the time. She has been arraigned and is currently at Bucks County Correctional Facility on 10 percent of $100,000 bail.

Mercy Hospital in West Philadelphia has decided to close its emergency room and end inpatient services after serving the community for over 100 years. Officials for the hospital say that it is losing money and continuing those services is not financially viable. The 157 bed facility employs 900 workers. There is no date set for the final closure, but services will begin to wind down. Many of those acute-care services will most likely be transferred to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, which is 3 miles away on Lansdowne Ave in Lansdowne. Hahnemann Hospital in Center City closed in July 2019.

"I am saddened and I am very concerned. The elimination of inpatient services and the closures of the emergency room means that lots of people who need healthcare in West and Southwest Philadelphia will have a much tougher time accessing it," said Councilmember Jamie Gauthier of the 3rd District.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Mercy says, "At Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, our catholic mission guides us to continually evaluate how we can best serve our community. After careful consideration, we have come to the financial realization that our Mercy Philadelphia campus simply cannot continue operating in an acute-care capacity over the long term. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. It is, however, the decision we are called to make.

In the coming months, we will begin the slow, deliberate and informed process of transforming our campus away from an inpatient hospital, shifting toward a model that can better and more sustainably serve the West Philadelphia community in the future. While we do not yet have all the answers, we promise to keep our patients, physicians and colleagues informed throughout every step of this process."

Philadelphia Police are looking for two suspects who stole iPhones from an AT&T store in the Philadelphia Mills mall. It happen around 9 p.m. January 27 at 1358 Franklin Mills Circle in Northeast Philly. The two suspects entered through the back of the store and forced an employee to open a cabinet storing the phones. The made off with multiple iPhones. The fled through the mall.
