No Charges for Gritty on Alleged Assault; Dead Man On Top of El; No Deerfield Fest 2020

Philadelphia Police announced on Monday, 2/3, that investigators did not find any evidence that the Philadelphia Flyers' mascot Gritty physically assaulted a 13-year-old boy during a VIP photo shoot last year. Police say that no charges will be pursued and the case in no longer active. In December, Chris Greenwell made public allegations against the popular mascot and called for a criminal investigation. The incident allegedly happened on November 19 at the Wells Fargo Center. After Greenwell and his son Brandon posed for a photo with Gritty, Brandon tapped the mascot on the head. Subsequently, Greenwell said that Gritty got out of his chair, lunged forward, and punched Brandon in the back. Greenwell said that Brandon was injured and required medical attention at the hospital. At the time, the Flyers conducted their own investigation and could not support the claim. They issued a statement on Monday in response to the police investigation: "We are pleased that the Philadelphia Police Department concluded there was no merit to the alleged claim. The police department's statement confirms our thorough internal investigation that found no evidence of the described actions ever having taken place."

Police are investigating after the body of a man was found on top of a Market-Frankford Line train Monday afternoon, 2/3. It happened just after noon near the Girard Station in Fishtown. SEPTA police and Philadelphia police are both investigating. The man may have been been a "thrill-seeker." The medical examiner will determine exact cause of death. SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel said, "It appears at this point it was a thrill-seeker on top of a train. We can't say enough times how dangerous reckless behavior is around trains and motor vehicles. It's just unconscionable." Police are looking at surveillance cameras to determine where the man may have jumped on to the train. There were delays in the area for around two hours. Trains are now running on schedule.

The Deerfield Township Harvest Festival will not be held in 2020. The Deerfield Township Recreation Committee decided not to hold the festival this year. The festival has been held annually for 41 years. Last year, 10-year-old Hailey McMullen was killed when she was thrown from the "Xtreme" Super Sizzler ride. "After 41 years of planning and running the festival, the Festivalâ€™s volunteers agreed that it was time to take a break from the event for at least a year," the Deerfield Township Recreation Committee said in a Facebook post.
