Charges Filed In Missing Erin Schweikert Case; Attack on 14yo Video; PFT Files Suit on District

Charges have been filed against a woman in connection with the discovery of a missing teen's body inside a plastic bin in a South Philadelphia basement last week. The Philadelphia District Attorney's office announced that Maddison Leidy is charged with abuse of corpse, tampering with evidence, and false identification to law enforcement officer. The body of 18-year-old Erin Schweikert was found at a residence on the 2100 block of Porter Street on January 16, 2020. The Philadelphia Sheriff's office was serving a robbery warrant to a female at the location and Philadelphia Police were there following up on a tip about possible human trafficking. Schweikart was last seen on September 27, 2019 on the 2300 block of South Lee Street. The cause and manner of her death have yet to be determined, however, there were no visible signs of trauma. The investigation remains open.

Philadelphia Police are searching for multiple suspects wanted for attacking and robbing a teenage boy on his way home from school in Feltonville earlier this month. The incident was caught on surveillance video. It happened around 3:30 p.m. on January 10th on the 300 block of East Rockland Street. The 14-year-old was walking down the street when he was approached by other young males. The teen backs up as the suspects begin to punch him. They steal his black Samsung Galaxy S7 cellphone and run off. Several other males looked on as it happened. The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital to be treated for injuries. The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers announced on Monday, 1/20, that is suing the Philadelphia School District over its handling of asbestos in Philadelphia schools. "Time and again, the School District has claimed that their actions are out of an abundance of caution. What we've seen time and again is the District's willingness to throw caution to the wind and as a result put children and educators at risk," PFT President Jerry Jordan said. 174 of the school district's 214 schools have asbestos somewhere in the building. It becomes a danger when it is airborne. Several schools have temporarily closed for abatement this year. Teachers and students have to deal with relocations. "All of our students and staff members deserve that we stay 100% focused on our efforts to improve environmental conditions in schools. We will do just that. Our hope is that we can focus our collective efforts on finalizing the processes and protocols document we proposed to the PFT in November and genuinely working together - without distractions - to address environmental issues effectively and with the urgency our students and staff deserve. We will thoroughly review the legal filings once we receive them," the school district said in a statement.
