Teen Charged in Foster Mom, Missing Man's Death; Gas Leak Cause of Explosion; Man in Trash Bin ID'd

A 17-year-old has been charged in the deaths of his foster mother and a man who had recently been reported missing. Xavier Johnson is charged with the stabbing death of 64-year-old Renee Gilyard and 20-year-old Jimmy Mao, in separate incidents. Gilyard was found in her bathtub on the 300 block of Mechanic Street in Germantown early Wednesday morning, 1/15. Johnson has only been in her custody for three days. He stole her SUV and purse. Mao had been last seen on December 29th. His body was found on the 5800 block of Angora Terrace in Southwest Philadelphia. His body was placed in a black duffel bag and thrown down a hill. 16-year-old Jacob Merritt-Richburg is also missing and may have information about the crimes. Johnson is charged with murder, theft, tampering with evidence, fleeing or eluding a police officer, and other charges in Gilyard's death. He is charged with murder, robbery, abuse of corpse, tampering with evidence and other crimes in connection with Mao's death.

Philadelphia Fire officials said Thursday afternoon, 1/16, that the deadly row home explosion in South Philadelphia last month was caused by a natural gas leak from piping in the street. They are still investigating how the pipe was cracked. "We certainly anticipate getting to the root cause of this incident will take some time and weâ€™ll continue to provide whatever support we need to [Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission] and our partners as that investigation proceeds," Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said. The explosion happened on December 19th on the 1400 block of South 8th Street. Two people died and three row homes were completely destroyed.

Philadelphia Police have identified a man found dead in a trash bin in the Olney section on Tuesday, 1/14. The body of 22-year-old Darius Cheeseboro of East Albanus Street was discovered in a bin on the 600 bock of West Rockland Street. A teenage girl, who knew about the homicide last month, told school officials about the body. Police are still looking for the suspects.

Legendary Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver Harold Carmichael will be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the NFL's Centennial Class. Carmichael played for the Eagles from 1971-1983 and set all-time franchise records in career receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. The ceremony will be held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, in August.
