North Philly Hit-And-Run Vehicle Photo; Mark D'Amico Federal Indictment; 149 Tobacco Permits Revoked

Philadelphia Police have released new information in connection with the fatal hit-and-run in North Philadelphia earlier this week that killed a father of five. Police are circulating surveillance footage of a white sedan with a moonroof that was taken around the time of the accident. They are not saying that this car was the striking vehicle, but that they believe the driver may have information that could help with the investigation. The accident happened on Monday, 1/6, at 10:20 p.m. near Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue. 36-year-old Karon Underwood was struck and killed as he crossed the street. The driver fled the scene. Underwood worked in construction and his children are ages 2 through 13. If you have any information contact police at 215-685-3180.

Mark D'Amico, who recently pled guilty to state charges for his involvement in the $400,000 GoFundMe scam, was indicted on Wednesday, 1/9, on 16 federal wire fraud and money laundering charges. 40-year-old D'Amico is charged with one count each of conspiring to commit wire fraud and conspiring to commit money laundering, as well as on four substantive counts of wire fraud and 10 substantive counts of money laundering. His co-conspirators, 29-year-old Katelyn McClure and 36-year-old Johnny Bobbit, have already pled guilty to state and federal charges. The three of them made up a story that Bobbit gave his last $20 to McClure for gas when she was stranded on I-95. They set up the online fundraiser to help the 'generous' homeless veteran. More than 14,000 people donated. Authorities started to investigate after Bobbit sued the former couple because he wasn't getting his share and they were spending lavishly. Investigators discovered that the whole story had been a ruse to begin with. Authorities have alleged that D'Amico was the ringleader. These charges each come with maximum fines of $250,000 and maximum prison terms of up to 10 or 20 years a piece.

Philadelphia health officials came down hard on businesses illegally selling tobacco products to minors. "We hope that this action today will send a message to the other stores in the city that we're serious. If they continue to sell to kids, they're going to lose their tobacco sales privileges," Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said. Farley says that 149 stores have had their permits revoked for repeated citations for underage sales. Stores that are caught three or more times selling tobacco products to underage kids can have their permit pulled. They can try and renew in one year. Stores are caught through compliance checks. "Teenagers are trained and they go in with an adult chaperone. If they're able to purchase that tobacco product, we write them a ticket, cite them for a violation," Farley said. Last year, Pennsylvania had passed a new law raising the state smoking age to 21. It won't go into effect until July. However, as a result of a new federal law the FDA has raised the national age from 18 to 21 effectively immediately. https://www.fda.gov/tobacco-products/products-ingredients-components/cigarettes
