Mayor Nutter calls Trayvon an "assassination"; Hoodie Rally planned for Monday at Love Park

Philadelphians will rally once again Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Love Park with a candlelight vigil. This is the one month anniversary of the death of teenager Trayvon Martin. Organizers are asking that demonstrators show up wearing hoodies as a show of support of the unarmed teenager who was killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer. This is the second organized demonstration in Philadelphia, there was a march on Friday which drew thousands. There have been other such demonstrations in cities across the country calling for justice.

Mayor Nutter appeared on MSNBC today and expressed his thoughts on the growing national story .

"I've called this nothing short of an assassination," Nutter said on MSNBC. "This individual Zimmerman followed Trayvon for some period of time. Trayvon was not a threat to him.

"Clearly Zimmerman was told not to continue any kind of pursuit. In my view at least . . . he tracked [Trayvon] down. He followed him and then shot and killed him. It's incomprehensible to me why an individual would do something like this, unless he had something either in his heart or on his mind."

Zimmerman saw Martin, who was walking home to his gated community after purchasing some Skittles and an Iced-Tea, and called police and reported 'suspicious activity'. The police told Zimmerman to stop following Martin, that it was not necessary. Zimmerman continued to follow the teenager and eventually confronted him. He shot and killed Martin who was unarmed during that confrontation.

The public outrage has been partly due to racial tensions. Martin was black and Zimmerman was hispanic/white. Though most of it has been about the injustice perceived. Zimmerman has not been arrested or charged. He claimed "self-defense" under Florida's Stand Your Ground law. It allows someone to "stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force."

"There was a young boy who was minding his business, a young African-American male . . . good kid based on everything that we know, and this guy on his own shoots him down with no logic, no reason, and no response from the law enforcement officials down in Florida."

"People will not rest until there is some justice on behalf of that young man, Trayvon Martin, and many, many other young people across the United States of America, especially African American males," Nutter said.

Both Mayor Nutter and Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams have been vocal and active in supporting this case. Which may be noble, if ill-advised for a politician to take a stance until all facts are known. (Just see Obama beer summit). However, the more pressing question for our local leaders is, why are you worrying so much about a injustice crime 1000 miles away, when we have 60 murders so far this year and a tire slashing happy vandal right under our noses to deal with?
