An elderly woman was killed in a hit-and-run in Northeast Philadelphia on Thursday evening, 12/12. It happened after 6 p.m. on Hendrick Street near Bustleton Avenue in the Somerton section. 82-year-old Yulia Sherman was found lying in the street with her roller bag of groceries. She had just left the Netcost Market at the Leo Mall. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene at 6:20 p.m. Police did find parts of a vehicle in the area. Witnesses on scene did not see the accident. Police hope that surveillance cameras might tell them which way the vehicle was traveling when it struck the lady. They believe they are looking for a dark colored SUV. Anyone with information should contact police.

The father of an 18-year-old who was accidentally shot and killed by his twin brother has been arrested. 42-year-old Aleem Gillard was arrested around 7 p.m. Thursday, 12/12, on the 5800 block of Chew Avenue. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter and other related charges in the death of his son Suhail Gillard. The shooting happened on December 1st inside the father's apartment on North 63rd Street in Overbrook. Suhail's twin brother Fayaadh was initially charged with the shooting, but all charges have been dropped. Police say that Aleem was showing his two sons and a 16-year-old daughter how to use firearms. One of those weapons went off while Fayaadh was handling it and hit Suhail in the chest. Aleem is a convicted felon and cannot legally own or handle firearms. He told his children to lie about the incident. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

A Wilmington woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for an arson that killed three firefighters in 2016. 30-year-old Beatriz Fana-Ruiz pled guilty to second-degree murder, arson, and assault. Fana-Ruiz set the fire in the basement of her father's home on the 1900 block of Lakeview Road in the Canby Park section. She had been living there and was apparently 'angry about her living situation and unhappy with her life.' Wilmington Fire Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes died at the scene when the first floor collapsed. Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope was also caught in the collapse but died weeks later. ICE has issued a detainer on Fana-Ruiz, seeking to deport her back to Dominican Republic when released from custody. That will be a while.
