Teacher in Brandywine Declared Homicide; Mystery Odor from PES; Penn W Volleyball Cancelled

Delaware State Police have announced that the death of a teacher whose body was found in the Brandywine River this past summer has been ruled a homicide. Officials say that 50-year-old Susan Leyard of Wilmington died from a combination of blunt force trauma and drowning. She was discovered in the river near the Church Street Bridge on July 23rd. Police had found her vehicle on Walkers Mill Road in the area of the Rising Sun Lane Bridge, about three miles up stream from where she was found. Investigators have accounted for her whereabouts up to 3 a.m. that morning and are looking for tips from anyone who may have more information. Leyard taught at Academy Park High School in Sharon Hill, Delaware County since 2006. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit by calling 302-365-8441.

A mysterious odor reported in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, 11/14, has been traced to the closed Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in South Philadelphia. The fire department conducted air monitoring tests and did not detect any volatile substances. PES was cleaning and disassembling pipes when the odor was released. The refinery has been shutdown since a huge fire and explosion this past summer.

The University of Pennsylvania has cancelled the remainder of the women's volleyball season after the discovery of "vulgar, offensive, and disrespectful posters" in the team's locker room. The content of those posters has not been revealed. The team had two games remaining on the schedule, road games this weekend at Yale and Brown. "These actions were in violation of team and Divisional policy and this matter has been referred to University administration for further review in accordance with University policy," a statement read. "The behavior exhibited by our women's volleyball student-athletes is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated," Athletics Director M. Grace Calhoun wrote in the statement. "We expect our student-athletes to represent the University of Pennsylvania in a first-class and respectful manner at all times, and in this case, our volleyball student-athletes did not meet that standard. We have reviewed the matter with the appropriate University partners and will determine additional steps in the coming days and weeks."

Last spring, several veteran players left the program and eight formal grievances were filed against the head coach, with little to no resolution.

"We want to make it explicit that the decision to cancel the final two games was in no way connected to the grievances submitted last season by volleyball student-athletes," a later statement read. "If this behavior had been exhibited by any of our 33 intercollegiate teams, there would be similar consequences."
