EF-2 Tornado Hit Delco on Halloween; Box Explodes in Philly Trash Truck; Oxford Circle Rape Arrest

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado struck Delaware County on Thursday evening, 10/31. The tornado damaged dozens of homes, around 8 severely, along Chelsea Court in Thornbury Township near Glen Mills. Trees were toppled, roofs torn off, and windows were shattered by the intense winds along a 3/4 mile path. An EF-2 tornado can have wind speeds of 111 to 135 mph. The NWS estimated peak winds to be 120 mph. There were only minor injures. NWS agents are also looking into a possible tornado in Bucks County. Tornado warnings were posted across the area around 11:30 p.m. Halloween night. The storm hit quickly and many trees are down across the region. Those trees landed on numerous homes and rescue crews were busy helping residents escape. Power went out for 1,000s of electric customers. Several SEPTA lines were also shut down due to downed trees and power lines. From one extreme to another, most of the region (excluding Philadelphia County) there is a freeze warning for Friday Night/Saturday morning.

UPDATE: The NWS has determined that storm damage in Hartsville, Warminster Township, Bucks County, was due to straight line winds and not a tornado. However, the estimated peak winds were still 110 mph. The area suffered many toppled trees, including 9 utility poles along Street Road. Some customers may not get power restored until Sunday night.

A sanitation worker was injured when a box exploded after being thrown into a sanitation truck on Friday morning, 11/1, in West Philadelphia. It happened at 10:20 a.m. on the 400 block of North 53rd Street. A new homeowner found a box left by the previous owner and put it out on the curb for trash pickup. It apparently contained and oxygen tank, paint thinner, and other items. The box exploded when the garbage truck crushed the pressurized oxygen tank. There were no combustible explosives involved. The worker was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. No word on his condition.

Philadelphia Police have arrested a suspect wanted in the rapes of two teenagers in Oxford Circle last month. 20-year-old Drean Tabb was taken into custody on Friday, 11/1, by the Special Victims Unit. (see photo below) Tabb is accused of sexually assaulting two high school girls after they each stepped off a SEPTA bus near the intersection of Levick Street and Bustleton Avenue. The first attack happened on October 15th at 12:15 a.m. Tabb allegedly followed an 18-year-old woman, approached her from behind, and led her down a driveway before raping her. The second attack happened on October 21st at 10:30 p.m. This time he followed a 16-year-old girl, pulled her jacket over her head, and led her down an alleyway. Tabb has not yet been charged.
