Over 10,000 Attend 16th PA Conference for Women in Philadelphia; Elizabeth Gilbert, Ava DuVernay

The 16th annual Pennsylvania Conference For Woman took over the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019. Over 10,000 women (and some men) filled the keynotes, sessions, ballrooms, halls, and exhibit floor. Today's headline speakers included author James Clear, co-CEOs Carly Zakin & Danielle Weisberg, author/journalist Celeste Headlee, author Elizabeth Gilbert, writer Jesmyn Ward, and writer/director/producer Ava DuVernay.

"My years in college taught me that success is not the result of making one good choice. Real success requires step after step after step. It requires lifelong education and hunger and patience," said Jesmyn Ward, a MacArthur Genius and two-time National Book Award winner. "Persist, work hard, face rejection."

"The reality of priorities is that you cannot have very many of them. There's a couple things that you can care about, there's a couple people that you can care about. And if you extend past that, you will break and you will actually be affected, you will actually be unable to do the stuff that matters to you," said Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Eat, Pray, Love."

"I am not fearless, but I do fear less than I ever have. Everyday I just fear a little less. That is how I interpret and embrace the word fearless," said Ava DuVernay, film director/producer.

The exhibit floor was split into distinct areas depending on the types of organization. There was the Career Pavilion, Health and Wellness Pavilion, Community Pavilion, Education Pavilion, and the Women-Owned Business Marketplace. There was also programming scheduled around the exhibit floor during the day in each section geared more specifically to those topics. You could also get some hands on, practical experience such as resume review, career counseling, tech advice, and small business guidance.

Attendees had the opportunity to attend several breakout sessions featuring over 100 speakers on various topics under personal development, leadership, personal finance, emerging professionals, career advancement, and personal development. If there was an overall theme from the sessions I attended through out the day it would be, "Don't Be Afraid." Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid that something is not perfect yet. Don't be afraid to take the next step. Don't be afraid to be who you are or want to be. Don't be afraid to raise your hand, ask a question, share your idea, or say "I don't know." The worst that can happen sometimes is that you get shot down and are left in the same position as if you had done nothing. Don't be afraid to do.
