Kevin Hart Released From Hospital; Teachers Call For Asbestos Removal; NJ Vaping Task Force

Philadelphia comedian Kevin Hart was released from the hospital on Wednesday, 9/11, and is reportedly in good spirits following a car accident in Malibu, CA, on September 1st. Hart underwent emergency surgery to repair three fractures in his back. After being discharged, he was taken straight to an in-patient rehab facility to work on physical therapy for the next 1-2 weeks. He was a passenger in his own classic car when it went off the side of the road and rolled down a crevasse. Two others in the car were also injured.

The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers is calling for the elimination of lead and asbestos from every school building after a longtime teacher was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma. That teacher worked at Meredith Elementary School in South Philadelphia. The union wants there to be a $100 million investment. "The fact that our schools could be the culprit in this and other cases is alarming and unacceptable," said Jordan, "We need the funding that will allow us to remove these materials from every school, and we need it now," said PFT President Jerry Jordan. The School District of Philadelphia says that 29 schools were cleaned of asbestos over the summer, but Meredith was not one of them.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order creating a task force to provide recommendations on vaping following recent nationwide severe lung illnesses and deaths tied to e-cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control is investigating more than 450 cases of vaping-related illnesses and six deaths. "I urge New Jerseyians to follow the recommendation of the CDC and discontinue the use of all vaping products," Murphy said. NJ Senate President Steve Sweeney is also backing a bill to ban flavored vaping products and even supports completely banning vaping in the state. The Trump Administration has also spoken of banning flavored vape products. Proponents of vaping, especially vape shop owners, are not happy about these proposed bans for numerous reasons. They say the current problems people are having are happening because they are either using cheap unregulated online products or illegal cartridges laced with THC. "We understand why Sen. Sweeney, as well as the governor, are concerned about youth usage. No youth should vape but to keep deadly cigarettes legal on the market while removing harm reduction products simply doesnâ€™t make sense," said President of American Vaping Association Gregory Conley. The task force will deliver Gov. Murphy a report in three weeks.
