Haverford's Bon Air Fire Company to be Reinstated; Woman Beat Baby to Death; Woman Shot Dead Driving

Bon Air Fire Company in Haverford Township, Delaware County, will be returned to service after it has acknowledged that it mishandled a personnel situation last week when a volunteer member resigned due to his involvement with an extremist group. "The initial decision to refuse the resignation was a mistake," the company said. "We agree with the township that the board of the Bon Air Fire Company should have accepted the resignation because it is important that all volunteers who represent the township do so free from bias and without discrimination." Bon Air says it will review its anti-discrimination policies and have members "participate in regular training to address tolerance and unconscious or hidden biases."

A woman has been arrested for beating her 5-month-old baby boy to death inside their North Philadelphia home on Saturday morning, 9/7. 35-year-old Nadirah Al-Kaabah is charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of an instrument of crime. Police responded to a family member's 911 call at 9:26 a.m. on the 1600 block of West Erie Ave. 5-month-old Nyeem Kitchen was unresponsive and pronounced dead minutes later. Al-Kaabah was taken in for questioning and admitted to beating the child. "She admitted to beating her child with objects that were located inside the bedroom. Nadirah Al-Kaabah was subsequently charged with murder and related offenses," said Captain Jason Smith from the Philadelphia Police Homicide Division said. She used a TV remote and a musical toy. Al-Kaabah has 16 prior arrests including assault on a police officer. She was on parole until 2022.

A young mother has died after being shot in the head while driving and crashed into the front steps of a home in Germantown on Sunday night, 9/8. It happened just before 11 p.m. in the area of Price and McMahon Streets. Police found a blue Honda Odyssey crashed on the front lawn of a home with 22-year-old Acacia Nykira Byrd trapped inside. Firefighters pried the doors off and discovered that Byrd had been shot in the back of the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Byrd lived on nearby Green Street and was mother to both a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old. Police found a live round inside the car and an unfamiliar cell phone. She may have been shot a block or two away and managed to drive this far before crashing. They do not know if the shooter was inside or outside the vehicle at the time. They are looking for a black Mercedes or Lexus that was driving around at the time.
