Boy Denied Shelter in Lower Bucks Chamber of Commerce; Public Health Emergency; NJ Assisted Suicide

The Lower Bucks County Chamber of Commerce has apologized after it wouldn't let a teenage boy inside their offices on Wednesday afternoon, 7/31, as he sought shelter from a severe thunderstorm. 13-year-old Collin Giambrone of Levittown was fishing at Caroline Lake in Fairless Hills, which is behind the Chamber of Commerce offices. He fishes there a few times a week. Wednesday's storm popped up in Northeast Philadelphia and moved into Bucks County. It had high winds, heavy rain, hail, and frequent lightning. Giambrone ran to the nearest building, fishing poles in hand, and asked if could stay inside. He was told he was not allowed in. Collin had his phone recording while he was standing under an overhang outside the LBCCC's door when a lightning bolt struck a street light just a few feet away. The Chamber released this statement on Thursday: "Yesterday we made a mistake when a young teen was seeking shelter from the storm inside the LBCCC building. We have recently had several security issues and we allowed those experiences to cloud our judgment. We very much regret what happened yesterday and will be reaching out to the young man and his family to try to set things right."

The Philadelphia Health Department has declared a public health emergency because of an ongoing hepatitis A outbreak. Normally, the city has two to six cases of Hepatitis A per year, but this year it has been notified of 154 cases. Hepatitis A is a liver infection that is contracted through close personal contact or contaminated food or water. "We don't want anyone to contract Hepatitis A, and we have the ability to stop this outbreak. Now that we have a safe and effective vaccine, the most important action we can take is for everyone at high risk to be vaccinated," Dr. Thomas Farley, health commissioner in Philadelphia.

New Jersey is now the seventh state to allow terminally-ill patients to seek life-ending drugs. Democratic Governor Phil Murphy signed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act in April, it goes into effect August 1. Patients with less than a 6 month prognosis qualify. There are number of safeguard measures. Patients must make two separate requests. They also have the chance to rescind a request.
