Dad Dies Saving Son From Ocean in Atlantic City; ATV/Dirt Bike Swarm Ridge Pike; Mayor Visits Canada

A 59-year-old man died trying to save his 11-year-old son from drowning in the ocean in Atlantic City, NJ, on Monday morning. It happened just after 9:30 a.m. at the New Jersey Avenue beach. Police say that boy and his father are from Reading, PA. The father entered the water because his son was apparently drowning in the current. The boy was able to reach the shore, but the man began to struggle. Jim Glorioso Jr., a retired New York police officer, grabbed a boogie board and went in to rescue the man. The father had gone underwater by the time Glorioso got to him. He tried to pull him onto the board. At that time, the Atlantic City beach patrol chief and firefighters arrived to help. The father was unresponsive as firefighters performed CPR on the beach. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. The boy was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The Atlantic City Beach Patrol was off duty at the time.
UPDATE: The father has been identified as 58-year-old Thanh Bui.
A swarm of illegal dirt bike and ATV riders made their way out of Philadelphia and into Montgomery County on Sunday evening causing concern for authorities and other motorists. The group of upwards of 200 travelled up Ridge Ave onto Ridge Pike in Lafayette Hill, Plymouth Township, and Conshohocken. The mostly unlicensed vehicles drove erratically, popping wheelies, speeding, driving on sidewalks, into oncoming traffic, and between cars. There were two reports of injured riders. One woman fell of the back on a bike. She fled the scene when EMT's tried to treat her. 31-year-old Michael Capers of Philadelphia was injured when his bike chain broke. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. His bike was towed and he received several traffic citations.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and other city officials are heading north to Canada on Tuesday, 7/30, to visit safe injection sites in both Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto, Ontario. "The Mayor looks forward to meeting with public health and safety officials in these cities to learn more about OPS operations and their impact on public safety and neighboring communities, as well as any other lessons that can help Philadelphia in its effort to combat the opioid epidemic," said a spokeswoman for the mayor's office. Safe injection sites or Overdose prevention sites (OPS) are locations that allow drug addicts to inject/use drugs in a clean environment while being supervised by a physician or nurse. In the event that the user overdoses, an overdose treatment can performed immediately and their life would be saved. If they were on the street, they would have probably died. Philadelphia has one of the highest overdose death rates in the country, over 1,100 per years. A non-profit, Safehouse, wants to open a safe injection site in Kensington. They have been met with opposition from residents.
