Brandon Olivieri Sentenced 37 yrs to Life; Police Shoot Teen Suspect on Walt Whitman; PES Bankruptcy

A South Philadelphia teen that shot and killed two other 16-year-olds during a fight in October 2017 was sentenced Monday to 37 years to life in prison. Brandon Olivieri, now 18-years-old, was found guilty on all counts in the murders of Sal DiNubile and Caleer Miller. He faced first and third degree murder charges. It happened on Oct. 24, 2017. Olivieri and DiNubile were neighborhood rivals. Olivieri was embarrassed by a previous fight between the two and pulled a gun during this encounter. Miller was Olivieri's friend and was shot accidentally. It took the jury three hours to reach a verdict back in May. The defense plans to appeal.

Police shot and injured a 17-year-old suspect on the Walt Whitman Bridge early Monday morning, 7/22, after he crashed a stolen school bus and brandished a knife. It happened around 12:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on the Philadelphia side of the bridge. The bus had crashed into the right side barrier. Delaware River Port Authority officers found bus and the West Deptford boy walking eastbound on the bridge with a knife. After trying several times to have him stop and drop the knife, the teen began to charge the officers with the knife. That is when the two officers fired at him. The boy was taken to Childrenâ€™s Hospital of Philadelphia and is in stable condition. The bus was stolen from a bus dealership called H.A. DeHart and Sons in West Deptford late Sunday night, 7/21. New Jersey police had pursued the bus for a while before calling off the pursuit for safety concerns. Only one lane was open heading into New Jersey for several hours while the investigation was being conducted.

One month after the devastating explosion at South Philadelphia's oil refinery, Philadelphia Energy Solutions has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Days after the fire, PES announced that it would be closing the 150-year-old complex, which is the largest on the East Coast. This will affect over 1,000 jobs. PES has "entered into a proposed debtor-in-possession financing agreement with holders of the company's outstanding term loan debt providing for up to $100 million in new funding," the company said in a news release. "(Sunday)'s agreement provides PES Energy with the additional financing and liquidity necessary to ensure we can safely wind down our refining operations and, with the support of our insurers and stakeholders, best position the company for a successful reorganization, the rebuilding of our damaged infrastructure, and a restart of our refining operations," PES CEO Mark Smith said.
