Teens Loot South Street Walgreens Video; Man/Sailboat Washes Ashore in NJ; Hahnemann Stops Maternity

Philadelphia Police have released surveillance video showing a large group of teenagers entering, damaging, and looting a Walgreens store on South Street on July 4th. It happened around 10 p.m. on the 1800 block of South Street. This same crowd of young people had been marching up South Street all evening, growing in size, disrupting traffic, causing violence, and otherwise being disorderly before it arrived at the store. Around 60 boys and girls stormed into the store. They can be seen on video knocking merchandise off shelves. A 46-year-old employee was hit in the head with a glass bottle and required medical attention. Many fled with items with out paying. The cost of damage and missing merchandise is estimated to be $6,000-7,000.
City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson represents that area. "I think it was totally unacceptable behavior. I think the young people who are involved and everything that took place inside the store should be held accountable. Most importantly, their parents should be held accountable," said Johnson.
"First and foremost they shouldn't have to close up shop at all," he said. "We're going to make sure curfew laws are strictly enforced and continuously stepping up our police efforts."
"People should feel safe," Johnson said. "They should be able to come out and go shopping without having to feel like they are going to be robbed or someone is going to hurt them or there's going to be some sort of flash mobbing." A sailboat carrying a man ran aground on Island Beach State Park, New Jersey on Tuesday morning, 7/9. According to the Coast Guard, they washed ashore around 12:30 p.m. He had been drifting since launching from nearby Barnegat Inlet on Long Beach Island two days ago. Lifeguards and emergency crews helped the man. He was taken to the hospital. He is said to be ok, but dehydrated. The 18-foot sailboat was towed from the water. It was not registered. State Park Police are investigating.
Hahnemann University Hospital announced on Tuesday, 7/8, that it will stop all non-emergency surgeries as of Friday, 7/12, including child births. Drexel's College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology sent a letter to patients saying, "If you are due to give birth in July and August, we will contact you by phone to help arrange for your admission to another Philadelphia hospital. Currently, Drexel Obstetrics and Gynecology is working closely with Thomas Jefferson, Center City. However, you may deliver your baby in any hospital you choose, and we will coordinate your care with any hospital you designate." A Drexel spokeswoman said that 819 pregnant women expected to deliver babies at Hahnemann. Philadelphia Academic Health System announced last month that it would be closing the entire hospital by September. On Tuesday, a Philadelphia judge granted an injunction sought by the city to stop the closing of Hahnemann. The injunction stops the hospital from closing without a closure plan authorized by the city health commissioner.
