Attempted Robbery for Kidney Transplant; Murder-Suicide at Berks Fire; NTSB Investigates SEPTA Death

Philadelphia Police are searching for a suspect accused of attempting to rob a store because he said he needed money for his daughter's kidney transplant. The incident happened at the 1 Stop Smoke Shop at Veree and Red Lion Roads in the Somerton section. The armed man was wearing gloves taped at his wrists, a heavy coat with hood, bandana over his face, a heavy shirt and pants. After the would-be robber had a few hundred dollars in hand, he decided it wouldn't be enough and gave it back. He told the worker that it probably wouldn't help his daughter's kidney operation. He turned around and left empty handed. No one was hurt. "I don't know what he's referring to, don't know if he has a daughter who has some sort of medical need, but he still is in violation of the law for committing a robbery even though he didn't walk away with anything," Philadelphia Police Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said.

Firefighters responded to a house fire in Berks County early on Tuesday morning, 7/9, and arrived to a murder-suicide in progress. It happened on Creeks Edge Road in Oley Township. Chief Ray Serafin of the Central Berks Regional Police Department say that when fire crews arrived to the home they met 62-year-old Stefan Strunk "waiting on the edge of this roadway." Strunk pointed to a woman's body nearby, identified as his wife, 62-year-old Joy Strunk. As the firefighters tended to the woman, Stefan shot and killed himself in the driveway. The home was destroyed. Police believe that Stefan set the blaze, but the cause of the fire has not been determined.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the fatal SEPTA accident that left a worker dead and another injured on Monday night, 7/8. It happened around 5:44 p.m. near the Erie Station on SEPTA's Broad Street Line subway. Darren Monroe has been identified as the worker killed. He had worked for SEPTA for 17 years. The two workers were working on the northbound side, inspecting tracks. Monroe fell backwards and was struck by a train. The second worker suffered minor injuries. "It appears they were inspecting the track at the time, making some minor repairs. It's routine that we would be conducting regular inspections during operating hours," SEPTA's Assistant General Manager Scott Sauer said. SEPTA says all safety protocols were followed.
