Philadelphia Police are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide involving a police officer and his estranged wife in the Juniata Park neighborhood. The couple was found around 9:20 a.m. in a home on the 4600 block of Weymouth Street. Police went to the home to perform a well fare check after their 17-year-old daughter called to report she hadn't heard from them for some time. They have been identified as 39-year-old Jose Rodriguez and 36-year-old Evelyse Rodriguez of the 6000 block of Tulip Street. Police Commissioner Richard Ross said that Evelyse was found dead in the dining room with multiple gunshot wounds. Jose was found in the basement with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A pistol was found next to the body. Jose was an 11-year veteran assigned to the 19th district.

A 12-year-old boy was critically injured after a firework he was handling went off in his hands on Monday night, 7/8. It happened just before 6 p.m. at the Houseman Recreation Center on the 5000 block of Summerdale Avenue. "He has injuries to both of his hands. We believe he lost a finger to one hand and he has severe injuries to the knuckles and palm of his other hand," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. "Initially the explosive device did not explode after the 12-year-old boy lit it and threw it. Then the 12-year-old boy picked it back up because it did not explode. And then when he had it back in his hand, that's when the device did explode," said Small. The illegal explosive device was more powerful than an m80 and closer to a m1000, sometimes called a "quarter stick" of dynamite, though still made of flash powder. Witnesses say he found it in the trash. They also said the explosion sent the boy in the air. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

A store owner and a robbery suspect were both shot during a fight inside a South Philadelphia corner store on Monday afternoon, 7/8. It happened around 3:15 p.m. at the Felix Supermarket on the 1600 block of South 23rd Street in Point Breeze. The two robbers entered the store and went straight to the back. They attempted to hold up owner 48-year-old Antonio Baez and a struggle ensued. Baez was shot in the chest and taken to Presbyterian Hospital and is in critical condition. A 27-year-old suspect walked into Methodist Hospital and was then transferred to Jefferson University Hospital. He is is critical condition. The second suspect is still on the loose. Family says that the store was also held up two weeks ago. If you have any information call police at 215-686-TIPS.
