Hahnemann Gets Cease and Desist on Closure; 78yo Steals Millions; Mother Held on Murder Charges

On Thursday, 6/27, the Pennsylvania Department of Health ordered the owners of Hahnemann University Hospital to 'cease and desist' any plans to close the hospital and halt actions aimed at winding down services. The company that owns Hahnemann announced on Wednesday that it intended to close the hospital by September due to financial losses and would start diverting trauma patients as early as Monday. Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine sent the 'cease and desist' letter. "Hahnemann University Hospital is vital to the community's health care and its owners cannot stop treating patients with no plans in place for their continued care," Levine said. "There is a legal process in place to ensure that this difficult transition happens in a way that protects public health. Hahnemann must follow that process, including keeping its emergency department open." She also noted the timing of the upcoming 4th of July holiday as even more reason to keep the trauma center open. Hospital employees, including nurses, held a rally outside of City Hall around noon calling on local and state leaders to step in and keep the 171-year-old hospital open.

A 78-year-old South Jersey man has been charged with stealing millions from his employer for years. Charles Esposito of Hainesport Township, Burlington County, stole $2,537,655 between 2005 and April 2019. Esposito worked for Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, a building supply company. He had been forging checks to himself, taking advantage of the company's procedures. He was finally caught when company officials spotted a $18,500 check that he had forged. He has been charged with theft by deception, computer criminal activity and misapplication of entrusted property. He is free on his own recognizance.

Prosecutors say that a Camden County woman suffocated her 17-month-old son to death in May 2018 because the boy was getting in the way of her extramarital affair. 41-year-old Heather Reynolds of Gloucester Township appeared in court on Wednesday, 6/26, for a detention hearing. Prosecutors say that Reynolds held a wipe over the boy's mouth and nose until he died. She then ran outside screaming for help from neighbors. Rescue crews found the boy on the front lawn. Her lawyer said that she denies having anything to do with the death. Judge Edward McBride ordered that Reynolds be held in jail until trial.
