Delco-native Joe Sestak Announces Dem. Presidential Bid; Person Killed By Amtrak; Refinery Fire Out

Former Democratic U.S. Congressman and Navy Admiral Joe Sestak has announced his candidacy for president. 'Adm. Joe' joins a very crowded Democratic field vying to challenge President Trump in 2020. He is the 24th democrat in the race. Sestak served two terms in the House of Representatives representing his native Delaware County (2007-11). Instead of running for the House again, he ran against incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter in the 2010 primary and won, but lost to Republican Pat Toomey in the general election. Trying for the same Senate seat in 2016, Sestak lost the primary to party backed nominee Katie McGinty. Joe was born and raised in Delaware County and attended Cardinal O'Hara High School. He graduated second in his class at the United States Naval Academy and served 31 years in the navy rising to the rank of three-star Admiral. Sestak had delayed entering the presidential race because he was caring for his daughter who has brain cancer. https://www.joesestak.com

A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Delaware County on Sunday afternoon, 6/23. It happened around 4 p.m. near the Ridley Park Station. The Northeast Regional train was traveling south from Boston to Washington, D.C. According to officials, the person was trespassing on Amtrak tracks near East Hinckley Avenue when they were struck. No one aboard was injured, but there were significant delays.

The last fire at a South Philadelphia oil refinery is now out according to city officials. They will continue to monitor air quality levels, but so far all readings have been normal. The fire was extinguished on Saturday afternoon, 6/22, after they were able to safely shut off the gas valve that was fueling the fire. The tank involved in Friday morning's, 6/21, explosion has been isolated and an investigation into the cause will begin on Monday. It happened on Friday around 4:05 a.m. at Philadelphia Energy Solutions' refinery. A tank containing a mixture of butane and propane exploded sending a huge fireball into the air and shaking neighborhoods for miles around. Five workers were treated for minor injuries.
