Dozens of Philadelphia Police officers have been placed on desk duty as a result of an ongoing investigation into controversial Facebook posts made by officers. Upwards of 50 officers have been taken off the streets. The police department has not confirmed the exact number it has grown to from the original 10 officers. Philadelphia was one of several cities that were the subject of a project focusing on police officer social media usage. The Plain View Project compiled a database of public Facebook made by officers "that appeared to endorse violence, racism, and bigotry." Attorney Emily Baker-White says that 328 Philadelphia officers past or present have posted troubling content.
John McNesby, president of FOP Lodge #5 said, Fraternal Order of Police said in a statement, "The FOP will continue to represent members in this overly-broad social-media investigation. We've been informed that those officers under investigation will be interviewed within days of being notified and will be returned to duty shortly thereafter. The FOP and our members utilize social media on a regular basis to bring people together and support one another. It is sad that the investigators with the 'social justice' group chose to ignore all the good work done regularly by our officers. During this difficult climate in which police officers are constantly under attack, the FOP will continue to support you."
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says an independent law firm is helping the department individually investigate the posts. There will also be:
- Anti-racist, anti-bias and social media training for all police personnel
- Additional roll call training on the social media, off-duty and race and discrimination policies.
- Internal auditing process to monitor social.
A suspect wanted in the shooting of former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz is also wanted for a shooting here in Pennsylvania. Police are still searching for 31-year-old Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, also known as "The Surgeon." Clase is charged with conspiracy to commit homicide in connection to a shooting on the 900 block of North Front Street in Reading back on April 22, 2018. The recent shooting happened in a crowded night club over the weekend in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Dominican officials have arrested 6 people so far, but are still looking for Clase and others. The accomplices were paid 400,000 Dominican pesos, or $7,800 to kill the popular baseball player Ortiz. The alleged shooter, Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, is also wanted in multiple robberies in Clifton, New Jersey. Ortiz, or Big Papi, has been flown back to Boston in an air ambulance jet. He is recovering in Massachusetts General Hospital.
Philadelphia Police are investigating after a woman was stabbed after a school function in Kensington on Wednesday night, 6/12. It happened after 6 p.m. near the Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts on the 1800 block of North Front Street. There was a cheerleading event happening. The 22-year-old female was stabbed in the side and back. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A 27-year-old female had minor cuts but refused treatment. A weapon has not been recovered and no motive is know. If you have any information call police at 215-686-TIPS.
Lew Klein, Philadelphia TV broadcast pioneer, has passed away at age 91. Klein was the executive producer of American Bandstand and producer of Captain Noah and His Magical Ark among other local programs. He helped launch Action News on Channel 6 and produced Phillies games for 15 years. Klein also taught at Temple since 1952, where the College of Media and Communication is named after him.
