Camden, New Jersey, is making a push to get illegal dirt bikes and ATVs off the streets. Not only are the off road vehicles not regulated to be driven on the road, many riders ignore traffic regulations like speed limits, stop signs, red lights, and lane lines creating danger conditions for everyone. On Friday, authorities announced a new program to fight the illegal vehicles. There are now stricter fines and penalties. "First offense, the vehicle is to be impounded for at least seven days and the owner is subjected to pay a fee up to $1,000," New Jersey Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez said. The Camden County Police Department introduced the "STOP-it" app. Anyone can easily and anonymously report activity. You can also send pictures, video, location info, and chat with police through the app.
A junior high school student in South Jersey was charged after he shared a sexually explicit video of a 12-year-old female classmate on social media. The boy was arrested by Little Egg Harbor police. Pinelands Regional School Superintendent Melissa McCooley urged parents to talk to their children about the video. On Facebook she said, "Please understand that the student depicted in the video is 12 years old, therefore, this is classified as child pornography. Those reposting a video such as this could be subject to criminal charges as well." She added, "It is evident that students need additional education regarding the ramifications of sending inappropriate messages/videos and social media. I will be reaching out to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office for assistance with this matter."
A 2-year-old girl was revived using Narcan after she was found unresponsive and choking on a used heroin baggie in Norristown, Montgomery County, on Friday afternoon, 5/31. It happened around 12:30 p.m. outside the Sister Mini Market at the corner of Marshall Street and Arch Avenue. It was caught on surveillance video outside the store. The mother is seen carrying her unconscious toddler out from the market and kneels down on the sidewalk. Several bystanders come to her aid. One man laid the girl down and went to open her mouth. He saw a small blue baggie, possibly the remnants of a heroin bag, and removed it. He then gave her some air. Police arrived and gave the girl a dose of Narcan. She woke up with in a couple of minutes and was taken to the hospital. She is in stable condition and expected to be ok. Police do not believe the drugs had anything to do with the mother, but they are investigating where it cam from. She was taken to the station for questioning.
This year's Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in unusual fashion. After hours of competition and 20 rounds, 8 spellers still stood. They were declared co-champions. They've dubbed themselves "the Octochamps." Two of the 8 students are from our area. Shruthika Padhy is from Cherry Hill, NJ, and is in the eighth grade at Rosa International Middle School. Her final round word was "aiguillette." Christopher Serrao is from Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. He is a seventh grader at Readington Middle School. His final round word was "cernuous." Each winner gets $50,000. |
