Plane Crash in Ocean in Cape May; Berks Co. Tornado Confirmed; Woman Found in Trash Can in Frankford

A small private airplane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off of a Cape May beach on Wednesday morning, 5/29. It happened around 11:30 a.m. near South Cape May Meadows Path between Cape May and Cape May Point. The FAA says that a Mooney M20J single-engine plane crashed about 1,200 ft from the Cape May Lighthouse. The Coast Guard responded to the scene. The plane is in about 18 feet of water. The pilot was the only person on board. It took off from Trenton-Robbinsville Airport in Robbinsville, New Jersey at 8 a.m. The plane belongs to Air Mods and Repair Inc. They would not identify the pilot, but did say he is frequent customer and has been renting planes a few times a week for the past three years. NJ State Police say this is now a recovery effort.

UPDATE: The pilot has been identified as 58-year-old Lawrence Klimek of Howell, New Jersey.

The National Weather Service confirms that an EF-2 tornado did touchdown in Morgantown, Berks County on Tuesday evening, 5/28. They have officials on the ground Wednesday to assess the strength of the storm. EF-2 tornados have winds between 111-135 mph. The high winds uprooted trees, peeled off siding and shingles, broke windows, and scattered debris. The Valley Ponds development was one of the hardest hit. One woman's car was pushed from the parking lot and on to the grass. Residents reported seeing an actual funnel cloud as the storm passed through around 6 p.m..

Philadelphia police are investigating after the body of a woman was found in a trash can in the Frankford section on Wednesday morning, 5/29. It happened around 6 a.m. on the 4600 block of Leiper Street. The body was discovered by a Republic Service Trash company employee emptying trash along the street. It was wrapped in plastic and in a plastic bag inside of the can. Authorities are trying to identify her. She is described as a black female, no word on age. A criminal investigation is under way.

UPDATE: The woman has been identified as 36-year-old Kioma Diehl. The cause of death is still under investigation.
