Delco Teacher Dies after Shooting; 9yo Brings Bullets to Philly School; 12yo Steals Car in Delaware

A former Delaware County teacher has died from his injuries after being shot over the weekend by his neighbor. 44-year-old Joseph Iavarone was shot in the head by 49-year-old John Ballas on the 100 block of Bishop Drive in Chester Heights early Sunday morning, 5/26. Iavarone died on Monday. He had been a teacher at Garnet Valley Middle School for 20 years and just recently resigned. Counselors were available at the school on Tuesday for for students, faculty and staff. Ballas was arrested at the scene on Sunday and is now charged with murder. He is being held on $1 million cash bail at Delaware County Prison.

A Philadelphia elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon, 5/28, after a 9-year-old girl was discovered in possession of live rounds and shell casings. It happened around 1:20 p.m. at the Fox Chase School on the 500 block of Rhawn Street. The girl had five live rounds and two shell casings. It isn't clear where she got them and why she brought them to school. The lockdown was lifted at 1:37 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested for stealing a car in Wilmington, DE. On May 17th around 3:45 a.m., an officer on patrol near 5th and North Rodney Streets spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Additional units were called in and found the car and the 12-year-old driver. The boy was arrested and charged with theft over $1,500. He was released to a parent after being arraigned in New Castle County Family Court.
