| 10 Shot Outside Bar in Trenton; Man Dies in Crash on Roosevelt Blvd; Newspaper Buy Outs/Lay Offs |

Ten people were shot and injured outside of Ramoneros Liquor and Bar in Trenton, NJ, early on Saturday morning, 5/25. It happened around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Brunswick Avenue and Middle Rose Street. Five women and five men were shot when two suspects opened fire on a crowd from a dark-colored SUV. There were 30 shots fired. The victims were ages 21 to 36 years old. Eight people remain in the hospital with two of them in critical condition. "We don’t have an actual motive," Trenton Police Director Sheilah Coley said. "According to some witnesses, before firing out of the car, the car kept laying on the horn, just kept beeping the horn because the traffic was backed up. We’re not saying this is road rage and we’re not saying this is retaliation. Because the truth of the matter is, we just don’t know at this point." This is the second mass shooting in Trenton in the past year. Last June, at the Art All Night festival, 17 were shot and 22 were injured total.
A 20-year-old man died in a single car accident along the Roosevelt Boulevard on Saturday morning, 5/25. It happened before 10 a.m. on the 3900 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. The man was travelling southbound in a 2004 Honda Pilot when he struck a tree in the outer lanes. He was freed from the vehicle and taken to Einstein Medical Center where he died a short time later. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. His identity has not been released.
Two of our region's larger newspapers are feeling the pressures of declining revenues. Cutting costs almost always means cuttings newsrooms and other staff. On Friday, 5/24, all 221 employees of the Reading Eagle were notified of lay offs after the family owned paper was sold to newspaper chain Digital First, also known as Media New Group. Some may be rehired once the new owners take over, but Digital First is notorious for keeping staffs slim. The Reading Eagle was founded in 1868 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 20. It was sold for $5 million. Not part of the sale is the FCC license to news/talk WEEU 830 AM. The physical building, transmitter, and tower are. Digital First has no plans on running a radio station and will it shut down. However, the FCC license is for sale separately. If it can be sold before the newspaper deal is completed, then the physical components can be leased by the new license holder..
On Thursday, 5/23, Philadelphia Media Network, which publishes The Inquirer, the Daily News, and Philly.com, announced that buyouts will be offered to staff across the organization, both union and non-union, in the editorial, sales, finance, advertising, and IT departments. The buyouts, or "Voluntary Separation Program," were offered to 140 employees. They hope that enough employees will take the buy out and that lay offs will not be necessary. In 2017, 50 newsroom staffers took a similar offer. The news organization is a for-profit enterprise owned by a nonprofit, the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, but it is not completely immune to the struggles of other newspapers nationwide. "We wish we didn't have to make these tough choices, but these are the economic realities of journalism in 2019," Terrance C.Z. Egger, Philadelphia Media Network’s publisher and chief executive, said in a statement. The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia said in a letter to its members, "We have been told again and again by Publisher Egger that we're different than the rest. Remember when he recently stood before you and noted that reductions in force were happening to all those OTHER media news companies?†|
