Stop The Bans Rally in Center City Philly; Arrest in Trans Woman Murder; Sentence for NJ Contractor

Pro-Choice groups across the country held rallies on Tuesday, 5/21. Activists were participating in the 'Stop The Bans Day of Action' in response to recent restrictions on abortion passed in several states including Georgia and Alabama. Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania organized the rally in Philadelphia at Broad and Locust. Protestors stretched down Broad St. towards City Hall along the median chanting and hold signs. Legislation in those states, which also include Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio, has not yet taken effect and will probably be blocked while it is contested in the courts.

Also sighted at the rally was a person dressed as a cup of Rita's water ice holding a sign that read "Stop trying to ban abortion." A spokesperson for Rita's says that the mascot's appearance "was absolutely not sanctioned by Rita's Italian Ice."

Philadelphia Police have arrested a man who allegedly shot and killed a transgender woman in North Philadelphia on Sunday morning, 5/19. It happened around 5 a.m. on the 3400 block of North 11th Street. 28-year-old Troy Bailey of West Venango Street is charged with murder and related charges. 40-year-old Michelle "Tamika" Washington was shot multiple times to her head and body. She was transported to Temple University Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police say that surveillance video shows the suspect and victim walking together before the shooting. Bailey first gave the police a false description of a suspect before admitting he was the shooter. He said the two had a dispute over the sale of a firearm. Police said "we donâ€™t necessarily believe thatâ€™s the case." Philadelphia Police Homicide Capt. Jason Smith said that the shooting is not being investigated as a hate crime.

"I am devastated by the senseless murder of yet another one of our trans sisters. Tamika was a brilliant and outgoing member of Philadelphiaâ€™s transgender community, known for her advocacy and mentorship, and she will be profoundly missed. The epidemic of violence that continues to plague the transgender community - disproportionately impacting trans women of color - is heartbreaking, frightening, and infuriating," said Amber Hikes, the executive director of Philadelphiaâ€™s Office of LGBT Affairs.

A New Jersey electrical contractor who pled guilty to multiple charges stemming from the federal probe of IBEW Local 98 was sentenced on Monday, 5/20. George Peltz was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. He will have two years of supervision once released. Peltz is the owner of MJK Electric. In January, he pled guilty to 10 federal charges, including tax evasion, theft from employee benefit plans, and unlawful payments to a union official. The indictment said that Peltz gave the unidentified official a $37,000 security system; gift cards, electronics, and large-screen televisions to the official and his family; and did $3,000 worth of work for the officialâ€™s relative. The official is not named in the indictment, but the probe has focused on union leader Johnny Dougherty. MJK Electric was the recipient of millions in contract work from Local 98 and others. Peltz also paid $958,000 in restitution in unrelated offenses.
