| Philly Pro-Life Rally Brings Over 1,000; SEPTA Conductor Shot at Station; 70yo Dead in Plastic Bin |

Over 1,000 Pro-Life demonstrators gathered near the intersection of 12th and Locust in Center City on Friday morning, 5/10, to rally in response to videos posted online by Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims. It was called 'From the City of Brotherly Love: A Pro-Life Rally Against Bullying.' Rep. Sims, whose 182nd District includes the Center City Planned Parenthood location, recently posted videos he recorded of himself confronting several pro-life activists outside the 1144 Locust St. clinic. In one video, he approached a woman and three teen girls and called for them to be identified or doxxed by the online viewers. In the second video, he disparages an older woman who appears to be silently praying. He has since removed the videos. Many are calling for his resignation.
The rally was held by Live Action. "Representative Brian Sims filmed himself harassing and berating, making sexist and racist comments," Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, said. "We will not back down to bullies. We will respond to your hatred with love and we will continue to fight for the day where every single child in this country in the womb is protected." The mother in the first video, 41-year-old Ashley Garecht, set up a GoFundMe page which has raised over $121,000 for the Pro-Life Union of Philadelphia. There were several Planned Parenthood volunteer escorts near the entrance to help guide patients.
Philadelphia Police are investigating after a conductor of a SEPTA Regional Rail train was shot Friday afternoon, 5/10. It happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of Emlen Street at the Carpenter Lane Station in West Mount Airy. The 57-year-old male conductor of the Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail line was standing on the platform of the station outside a train when he was approached by two men in their early 20s. They demanded money. One of the suspects shot him in the hip and they fled. The conductor, a 19-year SEPTA veteran, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition. He is expected to be ok.
Philadelphia Police are investigating after the body of 70-year-old Robert Derer was discovered in a plastic bin inside his Frankford apartment. Family members had reported Derer missing on Thursday afternoon, 5/9. He had not been seen since at least Monday night, 5/6, when he supposedly went to a pizza shop. After receiving the report Police went to his apartment on the 1600 block of Fillmore Street and saw blood on the door. They obtained a warrant to search the home. Derer had been living at this location for about a month. His roommates are all in their 20s. Police have already talked with some of them. Two brothers, ages, 28 and 25, may be involved. One of them is in the hospital himself and police are waiting to ask him questions. The medical examiner ruled that Derer was killed by multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death is homicide.
The family of Robert Derer released this statement:
"While the world is watching and learning about Robert Derer in the saddest and most unbelievable situation possible, our family would like to make sure that the world also knows about the man his family and friends knew and loved.
Bob was first and foremost a loving member of our family. He was a wonderful son, brother, godfather, partner, and uncle too many nieces and nephews. Many people considered him a loyal friend and he was the best type of friend that anyone could ask for.
Bob touched many lives and will be missed by many.
In Bob's younger years he was a great educator and after retiring he worked as a paralegal for many years. His biggest accomplishments were his love for life and the world in general. During his travels he experienced beauty that many people will never see.
Bob had the biggest heart, the brightest smile, and a laugh that could open the heavens.
We ask that when you think of our beloved Bob you understand what a wonderful and unique person he was and the mark that will be forever left on this world.
The family asks that after you hear or read this statement that you make a point to do something special or kind in memory of him." |
