Man Poses As Water Department in Robbery; Machete Man Wanted; Philly Rape Kit Backlog Tested/Cleared

Philadelphia police are investigating after a man posed as a Philadelphia Water Department employee during a robbery last week in the Grays Ferry neighborhood. It happened around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, 4/23, on the 3600 block of Wharton Street. He was caught on surveillance camera looking at homes. He was wearing a reflective vest when he knocked on the victim's home. The suspect told the victim that he had to check the water inside. He grabbed the victim and took their cell phone before running away. If you have any information or recognize the man, contact police.

A man armed with a machete attempted to abduct a woman in a parking lot in South Philadelphia earlier this week. It happened around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, 4/30, in the parking lot of the Hawthorne Lofts on the 1200 block of Fitzwater Street. The incident was caught on surveillance tapes (see video below). The suspect was lurking in the lot for about an hour checking vehicles before being approached by a 58-year-old woman. He lunged at her from behind a car and brandished a machete. He ordered her to get into the car, but she threw the keys and ran away. The suspect began to chase her but was startled by another vehicle. On Thursday, 5/2, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced that the Philadelphia crime lab has tested a backlog of 1,574 rape kits, some dating back to the 1980s. New leads in many unsolved cases have already been discovered. Krasner also said, "now that the backlog is gone, we will be able to significantly decrease the amount of time it will take the lab to process new cases." The goal is to analyze new rape kits within 90 days. It took about three years for the lab to clear the backlog, all while keeping up with new cases. Armed with this new information, detectives can investigate the unsolved cases.
