Suspect Identified in Boy's Shooting; Teen Hit Crossing Holmes Circle; Schuylkill River Dredging

Philadelphia Police have identified a suspect wanted for the shooting of a 13-year-old boy at a convenience store in Southwest Philadelphia early Wednesday morning, 5/1. Police are looking for 19-year-old Rafiq Small of Lansdowne. He is wanted for attempted murder and is considered armed and dangerous. The shooting happened at 12:30 a.m. at the Island Supermarket at Woodland and Island Avenues. The boy had just parked his bike and was entering the store when he was shot twice in the the abdomen. He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and had surgery. He remains in critical condition. Investigators do not know if the boy was the intended target. He and a friend had snuck out of a nearby group home to get a snack at the store. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact police at 215-686-TIPS.

A teenage boy was seriously injured after being struck by a car while crossing the street at Holmes Circle on Wednesday afternoon, 5/1. It happened at 4 p.m. on the 3000 block of Holme Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The 13-year-old boy was crossing the street and hit by a 2014 Nissan Altima. He was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene. No charges have been filed.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced at Boathouse Row on Wednesday morning, 5/1, that a fundraising campaign had raised $4.5 million to dredge the Schuylkill River. He was joined by members of local rowing clubs and the universities who donated to the effort. Drexel, Temple, Saint Joseph's, Villanova, La Salle, and Thomas Jefferson universities each gave $500,000. Penn gave $750,000. The city and state also contributed. Without the dredging, silt builds up in the river. The shallow water makes it harder to row and also creates safety concerns. "These events are not only beloved traditions but economic drivers for the tourism they bring to our city and our region," Kenny said referring to regattas like the Dad Vail. Penn President Amy Gutmann said, "From time to time, Philadelphia's most beloved icons really need some polishing." The project will start later this summer.
