Good Samaritans Save Woman From Schuylkill; Kate Smith Statue Removed; Deadly Accident in Northeast

Good Samaritans were able to rescue a woman after she drove her SUV into the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive on Easter Sunday afternoon, 4/21. It happened around 4 p.m. near Midvale Avenue between the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and Columbia Railroad Bridge. Witnesses saw the woman drive straight into river, perhaps intentionally. A few bystanders hopped into the river and swam out to the slowly sinking car. They were unable to open the doors, but eventually broke a window with a tire iron. The woman was pulled from the vehicle just as it sank. A passing dragon boat stopped and threw out life preservers to those in the water. The woman was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. No word on how or why she drove into the river. One of the rescuers was treated for a cut on the hand from the window glass.

Earlier on Sunday, the body of a man was found in the Schuylkill River north of the Girard Point Bridge. The call came in at 10 a.m. on the 2600 block of Penrose Ferry Road. The marine unit removed the body around 11:20 a.m. No word yet on an identity.

Two days after the Philadelphia Flyers announced they would no longer use singer Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" at games and covered up her visage in the Sports Complex in a black tarp, the team completely removed the statue from the grounds. On Friday, the team surprised most by cutting ties with one of the franchise's revered icons. The controversy surrounds two songs Smith recorded in the 1930s. They contain racial lyrics, but can be considered satire. In a statement on Friday, the team said it would "continue to look into this serious matter." The statue was completely gone by Easter Morning. See the Flyers full statement below.

Philadelphia Police are searching for a man who caused a chain-reaction six-car crash that killed 2 and injured 5 in Northeast Philadelphia Saturday night. It happened around 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Red Lion Road and Bustleton Avenues. It started with a man driving a Chevy Camaro at high speed on Bustleton. He plowed into the intersection and hit a car stopped at the red light. The Camaro then went around and t-boned a second car in the intersection causing it to flip over. A 50-year-old man and 48-year-old woman inside that vehicle were killed. That vehicle flipped into another car which hit another car. There were 6 total vehicles involved. Three adults, including a pregnant mother, an 11-year-old boy, and an 8-year-old girl were injured. They were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Camaro fled the scene in a white Lexus GS that came to pick him up.

Flyers Statement on Kate Smith

The Flyers have enjoyed a long and popular relationship with "God Bless America," as performed by the late Kate Smith, a woman who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor for her patriotic contributions to our nation.

But in recent days, we learned that several of the songs Kate Smith performed in the 1930s include lyrics and sentiments that are incompatible with the values of our organization, and evoke painful and unacceptable themes.

"The NHL principle 'Hockey is for Everyone' is at the heart of everything the Flyers stand for," said Flyers President Paul Holmgren. "As a result, we cannot stand idle while material from another era gets in the way of who we are today."

While Kate Smith's performance of "God Bless America" cannot be erased from its place in Flyers history, that rendition will no longer be featured in our game presentations. And to ensure the sentiments stirred this week are no longer echoed, earlier today we completed the removal of the Kate Smith statue from its former location outside of our arena.
