First Frat Members Sentenced to Jail in Piazza Death; Congestion Toll in Philly?; Delco Gas Shooting

The first four members of Penn State's former Beta Theta Pi fraternity were sentenced Wednesday, 4/3, in the hazing death of Timothy Piazza.

20-year-old Joshua Kurczewski from Erie, pleaded guilty in January to one count of conspiracy to commit hazing, one count of hazing and one count of furnishing liquor to a minor. He was sentenced to three to nine months in the Centre County Correctional Facility and ordered him to pay a $2,250 fine, serve 100 hours of community service and complete one year of probation.

21-year-old Michael Bonnatucci from Woodstock, Georgia, pleaded guilty in January to three counts of hazing and one count of conspiracy to commit hazing. He was sentenced to 30 days to six months in the county jail and ordered him to pay a $1,750 fine, serve 100 hours of community service and complete two years of probation.

21-year-old Luke Visser from Encinitas, California, pleaded guilty in December to six counts of hazing and one count of conspiracy to commit hazing. He was sentenced to two to six months in the county jail and ordered him to pay $2,500 in fines, serve 100 hours of community service and complete three years of probation.

20-year-old Joseph Sala from Erie, pleaded guilty in January to three counts of hazing and one count of conspiracy to commit hazing. He was sentenced to to three months of house arrest and ordering him to pay a $1,750 fine, serve 100 hours of community service and complete two years of probation.

The City of Philadelphia is considering charging a fee to drive into congested areas of the city. Chris Puchalsky, the Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives, says that Philadelphia's Office of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Sustainability is thinking about enacting a fee to drive through areas like Center City and University City during periods of high congestion. "Usually it's done by scanning your license plate and sending a bill," said Puchalsky. NYC is planning on doing something similar by the end of 2020 for drivers entering parts of Manhattan. Philadelphia officials do not have any definitive plans and are looking at NYC to see how that plan works out. No other city in the United States has implemented anything like this. London, Singapore, and Stockholm do have 'congestion tolls.' The city would hope the toll would encourage people to take transit and at the same time raise money for public transportation improvements.

An employee of a Delaware County gas station was shot during a robbery early Wednesday morning. It happened at a Lukoil station around 3:45 a.m. on the 1900 West MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township. It was caught on surveillance video inside the store. A man wearing a yellow jacket forced the 23-year-old employee at gunpoint to open and empty the register. After handing over the cash, there was a scuffle and the robber fired a shot at the employee. The victim only suffered a graze wound as the bullet went through the outside of his pants. The robber made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
