Philadelphia Inspector's Son Shot in FDR Park; South Street Melee; NJ Forest Fire Grows 10,000 Acres

The son of a Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector was shot and killed on Saturday night, 3/30, while tailgating in FDR Park following the late afternoon Phillies game. It happened around 10 p.m. inside of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park on the 1400 block of Pattison Ave. 20-year-old Nicholas Flacco, the son of Chief Inspector of Internal Affairs Chris Flacco, was shot once in the chest. He was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Flacco and his friends had attended the Phillies game and returned to their vehicle to tailgate after the victory. They got into an argument with another group in the park. Someone in the other group pulled a gun and fired, hitting Flacco. Witnesses say they saw the shooter flee in a green sedan, possibly a Honda. This all happened near the American Swedish Historical Museum. There is a $10,000 reward being offered by the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, in addition to the city's $20,000 reward offered on every homicide.

UPDATE: The reward is now $35,000.

Mayor Kenney said, "I'm extremely saddened by the tragic death of Nicholas Flacco. Every life lost to violence is one too many. It is all the more tragic when we lose a young person who had their whole life ahead of them. I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to Chief Inspector Flacco and his family, the Police Department, and all who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence. PPD is undergoing a thorough investigation and I urge the public to come forward to report any tips that can help find the person who did this. The anonymous tip line is 215-686-TIPS."

Philadelphia Police officers made several arrests on South Street early Sunday morning, 3/31, after a melee broke out. It happened around 2 a.m. on the 300 block of South Street. Officers were already arresting five people for disorderly conduct when the bars began to let out at 2 a.m. People began to harass the officers and several fights broke out. A citywide call for assistance was made do to restraints on the officer's resources in the area. At least four people were injured from thrown bottles.

A wild fire continues to burn in Burlington County, NJ, on Sunday afternoon, 3/31. As of 12:25 p.m., the New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported the fire is at 10,000 acres, 75 percent contained. The "Spring Hill Wildfire" was first reported on Saturday, 3/30, around 1:45 p.m. It is burning in Penn State Forest in Woodland Township. This is a mostly wooded pinelands area with sporadic homes. Portions of Rt. 72 remain closed. The cause of the forest fire is still under investigation.
