Jury says Death Penalty for Jacob Sullivan; Students Protest at Meeting; St. Joe's Hires Billy Lange

A jury of twelve spent 11 hours deliberating over 3 days in a Doylestown, Bucks County courthouse to come to a unanimous decision in the sentencing hearing of 46-year-old Jacob Sullivan. The jurors decided to impose the death penalty on the man that admitted he raped, drugged, murdered, and dismembered his girlfriend's adopted 14-year-old daughter Grace Packer in 2016. Sullivan had no reaction to the verdict, while some jurors were visibly upset. Bucks County Judge Diane Gibbons told him, "You have no soul." Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub said, "He got what he deserved, plain and simple... Death is the appropriate sentence for this man." Sara Parker will get life in prison for her part in the couple's "rape-murder fantasy." Governor Wolf has imposed a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania while he is on office, but the sentence can still be imposed. There are currently 142 other inmates on Pennsylvania's death row.

Student protestors took over a meeting of the Philadelphia School Board on Thursday night, 3/28, after a vote about metal detectors. The school board voted 7-2 to require all of its high schools to use metal detectors. Currently, 46 of 49 schools have walk through metal detectors and X-ray scanners. There are three magnet schools that do not. They are the Workshop School, Science Leadership Academy, and the Science Leadership Academy at Berber. Students from those schools and the Philadelphia Student Union came to the meeting to protest the vote. They believe their schools do not need detectors and shouldn't have them installed. They feel their school communities have fostered a level of trust and respect that would be eroded by the extra security. They feel like they would be treated like criminals and it would be like entering prison each day. The school board had to take a recess and move to a conference room to complete its agenda.

Saint Joseph's University has named former Sixers assistant coach Billy Lange as their new men's basketball head coach. 47-year-old Lange is a native of Haddon Heights, New Jersey. Recently, Lange has been defensive coach for the 76ers. Previously, he has coached at Villanova, Navy, La Salle, and Philadelphia University. "Our goal was to find a leader who would build on and add value to the rich history and tradition of our program. It was also very important to provide our student-athletes with a clear vision for the future of the program as quickly as possible. Luckily, Billy Lange emerged as the right leader and coach for the job. He has learned from the best, is deeply rooted in the spirit of Philadelphia basketball, shares family connections on Hawk Hill, and has a proven track record of developing young men on and off the court," said Jill Bodensteiner, Director of Athletics.
