Pottstown Shooting, Bullies to Blame?; Right to Die Bill in New Jersey; Car Arson over Trump Cutout

A family in Pottstown, Montgomery County, was targeted over the weekend as shots were fired at their home on Sunday night, 3/24. It happened just after dinner at around 8:30 p.m. on the 500 block of West Street. Around 15 shots were fired into the home. No one was injured. Marie Samba believes that a group of eighth grade girls who have been bullying her 13-year-old daughter are responsible. "My 13-year-old has a hit on her, from a bully? What possesses a grown person to take a 13-year-old's word to shoot up a house full of people?," Samba said. Pottstown Police are still investigating the incident. Pottstown School District spokesman John Armato did acknowledge that there were ongoing issues at the middle school between a group of girls and Samba's daughter. Samba has removed her children from the school district. Anyone with information about the incident to contact police at 610-970-6570.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says he plans to sign legislation that would allow terminally ill patients to seek life-ending medication. The "Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act" passed the NJ Senate and Assembly on close votes. Murphy said, "Allowing terminally ill and dying residents the dignity to make end-of-life decisions according to their own consciences is the right thing to do." According the bill, a terminal disease is defined as an irreversible disease that has been medically confirmed and will result in a patient's death within six months. There are built-in "safeguards" including requiring a patient to make two separate requests, and giving them a chance to rescind a request. Opponents say the bill will only hurt the most vulnerable in society and that New Jersey should instead be working on improving its healthcare system. "New Jersey ought to be investing in better care and support at the end of life, not enshrining this dangerous public policy into law," Matt Valliere, executive director of Patients Rights Action Fund, said in a statement. The measure passed the Assembly 41-33, with 4 abstentions. It cleared the Senate 21-16. New Jersey will join 6 other states and the District of Columbia that have similar 'right to die' legislation.

The Philadelphia Fire Marshal is investigating after a woman's car was set on fire in the city's Manayunk section early Monday morning, 3/26. It happened around 3 a.m. on the 4200 block of Pechin Street. 65-year-old Laurie Livingston awoke to find her 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier engulfed in flames. The incident has been ruled an arson. Livingston says her car has been targeted three times before in the past few months, but those times the tires were slashed and the windshield smashed. She believes it is all because she keeps a cardboard cutout of President Trump in her front seat. "I put Donald Trump and I donâ€™t care," she said. "I voted for him and I have the right to say what I want to say and then last night at 3 o'clock it blew up." Investigators have not yet found a motive for the arson.
