Meek Mill Day/Weekend in Philly; Fake Panhandler in NJ; Trocadero to Close; Philly ShopRite Closing

Today, March 14th, has been designated 'Meek Mill Day' in the City of Philadelphia. The proclamation was made by City Council President Darrell Clarke at Thursday morning's city council meeting. March 15th-17th has also been declared 'Meek Mill Weekend.' Pennsylvania State Sen. Sharif Street also honored Meek with a state level proclamation. Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill is being honored for his musical contributions and his support of criminal justice reform. Mill, aka Robert Rameek Williams, has had a long history dealing with the criminal justice system particularly with lengthy probation/parole terms following a drug and gun conviction over 10 years ago. Violations have sent him back to jail several times, most recently a year ago for 5 months. In January, he was one of several big names, including 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and Jay Z, that announced the Reform Alliance which is focused on "disabling the revolving door of probation and parole." Meek Mill will perform at The Met Philadelphia on Saturday night, March 16th 8pm with Lil Durk and Kash Doll.

Police in New Jersey are warning residents to be wary of donating to panhandlers as they may actually be scammers after one woman was caught begging while carrying an expensive phone and handbag. Union Township Police posted a picture of a woman to Facebook they found asking motorists for money near Vauxhall Road and Hilton Avenue. Her sign read, "I have 1 baby. Please in the name of God help me to buy baby stuff and diapers." It also had a picture of a young child (see photo below). Police say the woman claimed to be from Romania and now lived in Queens. They pointed out to her that though she said she needed cash for her baby, she had an new iPhone X, a $500 handbag, and some jewelry. Eventually, the woman admitted that she and some other women had been dropped off around New Jersey to panhandle. She was given a ticket for impeding traffic and a township summons of soliciting without a permit.

The Trocadero Theatre is closing! The former vaudeville and burlesque house that opened in 1870, turned seminal rock club of the past 30-40 years is expected to shut its doors on Arch Street in Chinatown soon. There has not been any official comment from venue owner Joanna Pang, but that's the word from employees. There are only a handful of events on the calendar through March and beyond in the main venue and the balcony bar. No more details are available at this time. UPDATE: The venue will close at the end of May.

A West Philadelphia ShopRite store is closing its doors today, Thursday 3/14, after being open almost 30 years and the owner is blaming the city's tax on soda and other sweetened beverages. Jeff Brown owns the store on the 6700 block of Haverford Avenue. He says that revenue is down 23-percent since the beverage tax was enacted. This store is located close to the city border, so some shoppers decide to patronize markets on the other side of the line to save money on beverages and then also purchase all their other groceries in the suburban store while they are there. Mayor Kenney disputes the claims. Revenue from the soda tax is supposed to pay for pre-K and improve parks and recreation centers. Brown owns several markets in the city. Any food not sold today (at deep discounts) will be donated to local food banks and shelters.
